Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Aug 04, 2013 10:46 pm Just wondering what people's thoughts are on this product as we are looking for a cube system to put in the kids activity room. It says on the Ikea website that it needs to be secured to the wall (thankfully) and just wondering what people's experiences are with this - I.e is it difficult??? They are easier to get the baskets back into and are lower down (I have two 5x5 expedits) so they can reach them. I also like that they are wood as opposed to coated cardboard cos my kids are NOT gentle hahahah Securing to the wall isn't difficult. You get an angle piece and it is 2 holes (I think). ______________________________________________________________________ Signed up Jan 2013........Almost done! The large unit for the kids toys are fixed to the wall. They use the plastic storage cubes with it and it helps keep the toys sorted. I don't have any photos of it but I think it's wonderful. Handover February 2011 Happy with our home Re: Has anyone got Ikea 'EXPEDIT' shelving??? 5Aug 06, 2013 8:00 am We have 5 Expedit units in our home. 3 2x4's in the kids upstairs TV room and 1 4x4 with desk attachment in my craft room, and another 2x4 in my craft room. None are fixed to the wall. The 3 2x4's won't fall over and our kids are getting older and won't pull them over. The 4x4 with the desk attachment offers support and won't fall over, either. Without the desk it probably would be attached, and certainly a 5x5 would if we had one. I actually like to move them regularly to get the stuff that falls behind them and to clean in behind them (3 asthmatics in the house). Great practical system...love them! They could sit on top of each other (to create a 4 x 4 system) but at the moment I have them as two separate units. One stands upright in the corner, and one stands lengthways next to her bed so it doubles as a bedside table etc. I find them versatile and great for books as well as adding boxes for toys etc. I have 2 similar sets in my son's room - also from Ikea but a range they no longer have. Pretty much exactly the same as Expedit. Again, I have 2 sets of 2 x 4 but I have them sitting on top of each other. I haven't had them secured to the wall as he was too young to pull them down..... but now that he is older and reaching to the top, I should either move the top one off, or secure them - for his safety Anyway, all in all, I would say well worth it for kids rooms (and probably elsewhere in the house too, but because I have them in my kids' rooms, I can't bring myself to use them anywhere else in the house because they remind me too much of kids furniture ) HHCIB Re: Has anyone got Ikea 'EXPEDIT' shelving??? 7Aug 06, 2013 10:50 am Stormy that looks REALLY good and you've answered one of our concerns as we have skirting boards in the activity as well and were worried about it not sitting right up against the wall. I've noticed Bunnings sell a similar thing now, I think it's called 'smart storage' or something but it doesn't quite look as nice. Think we will still go the 4x4 expedit system and I'm just wondering with the skirting boards and it not sitting flush against the wall can you still use the included wall securing devices? I've downloaded the installation sheet off the ikea website but its a bit hard to tell with the pictures whether the brackets are wide enough to accommodate it being a little bit off the wall... It also had to co-ordinate with the rest of the house. We ended up using expedit shelves plus the Expedit inserts for drawers and cupboards and we're really pleased with it. On one wall between the two vertical windows, we mounted a 5 x 1 vertically, with another 5 x 1 horizontally on top. Both units are fixed to the wall: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Because we wanted the vertical unit flush with the wall, I added legs to the bottom front (also from Ikea). The back of the unit rests on the skirting (100mm). With the unit secured and flush to the wall (brackets supplied with the shelves) and on legs, it's very secure. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ For my work area, I have a 2 x 4 expedit shelf with expedit desk, plus a 2 x 4 expedit unit positioned horizontal as a return. Then positioned another 1 x 5 expedit unit on top. The shelves above the desk are the Lack shelves as they match the Expedit units: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The expedit units next to my desk are not flush with the wall because of the skirting. I could have put legs on these as well so they would be flush, BUT the space allows me to run cables, etc. for the laptop, telephone, display, etc... (The gap is only 10mm.) Sorry about the messy cables and printer under the desk - that's to be tidied up with some cable ties. Strong enough for what? For linen, absolutely. To climb on, no.
