Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Aug 02, 2013 4:04 pm Hi All, Aikes! New day, new house, new problem! We've recently moved in and now we're experiencing a new issue, the last 1.5 weeks, I have noticed a rather loud, audible THUD/knocking noise against the drainage pipe in the plumbing stack when using the upstairs ensuite which is right above my kitchen/dining room where the plumbing stack is wedged against the external wall. The symptom is sometimes mild, sometimes very loud, but mainly mid level and I noticed it happening most often during: 1. Whoever is the first to use the ensuite basin/sink in the morning. 2. First user the basin/sink at after work. 3. When there use after a prolonged absence of water flow. e.g. me using it late at night after the wife has use it 3-4 hours ago. I've done a little experiment and it appears as if the pipe makes this noise when I pour down a bucket full of water into the hand wash basin. When my wife is using it upstairs to wash her face and having the tap on, it isn't as bad but still audible. How do I fix this? Or more importantly, is there a leak? Thridly, this can't be good in the long run for the pipe or joists as I'm a bit worried it will leak sooner or later with the constant banging against the joists. My dad (not a plumber) who came over swears by it is a leak but I'm not so sure, that noise does not sound like a leak and if so, the affected areas would be wet/damp by now...I've put my hand against the plumbing stack/surrounding areas and it feels dry/normal. We've contacted the builder twice who have sent around the most junior employees to have a look at it and each rubbed their hands cleaning blaming it's a design fault (which IT IS NOT) and the builder pointing to the plumber for poor worksmanship. So I suppose now I'm just after what is exactly happening (difficult I know to diagnose over the internet but I'll try anyway). What I strongly suspected from the start is inadequate ties being used to strap the drainage pipe to the joists. If it was a leak (touch wood it isn't) where would the water go? I've not seen any water marks or any gyprock seepage. My dad is adamant it is a leak. Thanks in advance for any advice. No point the builder blaming the plumber for poor workmanship, the builder is still responsible for getting it fixed. Good luck with this one as the industry is notorious for buck passing and not accepting responsibility. The standard of some of the plumbing work that I see in some blog photos leaves a lot to be desired yet it seemingly passes inspection, even the blatantly non compliant. 3in1 Supadiverta.
