Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Aug 01, 2013 10:03 pm G'day folks We've been planning to build a new place at the south coast for a while and the original plan that my brother came up with had kingspan for the external walls. After some discussions with kingspan(mostly them just being super annoying to deal with) and the cost which is quite high for moving a small quantity it won't be possible to use it for the external walls and stay within budget. Anyone know any other prefab panel systems that could be suitable for a small house? Or would it just be best to swap to something like Scyon cladding and save a few bucks? Cheers Binksy Re: External prefabricated panels 2Aug 02, 2013 8:11 am What kind of R-values are you looking for regarding your external walls ? Usually this kind of wall system is because the owners live in a hot or cold climate and are looking for the highest insulated wall system they can get. If you are looking to just get a well insulated wall any number of poly sheets from 50mm - 70mm - 100mm -150mm thick can be attached to the outside of your timber framing and then acrylic rendered. Stewie Re: External prefabricated panels 3Aug 02, 2013 11:02 am I've used Kingspan and similar panels in a few jobs and the economy comes with scale. We had 6M panel lengths and craned them into position. With your house it's definitely more efficient to use standard framing technology and cladding. The insulation can be put into the frame thickness and Bradford has plenty of systems of bats available. If you are looking for a well insulated building make sure that you choose the right glass type (could be double glazed) and quality frames either something solid like LIdco or timber frames. Seal all the doors and windows with draft protectors and insulate the roof properly. Another problem with panel construction is waterproofing. It's all done with channels and lots of mastic and you would probably have no end of trouble at junctions as it takes skilled people to do it properly.
