Browse Forums General Discussion Re: Pergola built - photos! 21Aug 10, 2013 2:19 pm Wow, I actually managed to post some images.... according to 'preview' it is working. (Sorry, not sure how to just post an 'img' link - so hope this is OK). Anyway, you can see a line in the decking - this was the original deck. So everything past that is new (1.4m x 7m) along with the pergola (which will be painted to match house). Funny, at first, I was worried it would be too big - but now - I already want more!! (And as the song is playing right this minute on the radio "I love it" ). We are now in a quandary what to do about matching the old to new decking. Easiest and cheapest is to stain new to match old. But, although it's hard to tell in the photo, the old is a reddish colour and I'd like to try and stick to the newish colour. So, we might even replace the old decking to match new. At least the footings etc are there so it will only be the cost of the decking timber (we will probably do it ourselves??). And, as long as we can figure out a way to use the old timber for another project (gate or fence or screen) then we can justify it a bit better. It's hard to tell, but on the right hand side half of the deck (the shaded area) - at the front (not the side) there is a step down. So yes, finally some sunshine after a week of me either working or it being freezing/raining and I can go outside and admire and enjoy it - and get a feel for how it is shading inside. So far no probs on that front - although will be interesting when it lowers a bit going over to the west (especially into DD's room - which is the other room/window you can see at the back of the house). And sun is already quite a bit higher in the sky.... next winter solstice will be the telling point. But kids are even already enjoying it which is great. Next step - figuring out some temporary shading for summer and possible permanent shelter for all year round?? For summer, we will probably go with some bamboo roll up - as per Bashworth's mention which we already had in mind . We never drive the car up this far and next project is ripping up the concrete (old and cracked and sloped and needs doing anyway). One option we are considering is to deck across to the fence - a step lower (same height would be good to give a feeling of expanse and maximise use, but but at the fenceline, we will feel we are peering over into neighbour's yard - unless we put up an extra tall screen). Or pave? This will be the bbq area/pizza oven area (DH set on a pizza oven) and depending on how fancy, possibly an outdoor kitchen area (definitely want an outdoor fridge)?? We can go back down the driveway - or back out into the yard a fair bit, but trying to save on actual yard space incase we find that money tree and are able to put in a pool one day - and wanting to save some garden area for the kids to run around in (let's not forget why we wanted a big block to begin with) - so we are trying to utilise the unused driveway space at this stage. But also wary that the further we 'tuck ourselves' down the side of the house and not actually out into the yard - we might not use it as much, or it might not flow right?? If we had a door on that side of the house, to step out onto the west side, might be a different story - but we don't. Any input/ideas on going back around the corner - so to speak - and whether you think it might limit use (put up a mental barrier, kind of thing)?? Given I am now a whizz at photos, I should post a pic of the space I have down the side of the house. HHCIB Re: Pergola built.... photos! 22Aug 11, 2013 7:37 am looking awesome. you can always use the privacy screens on the side closest to the neighbors i have seen some very nice ones what we did to stop us and potential neighbors we only have spare land at moment looking over our alfresco was use the decking timber at the back of the barbie area. we have a lovely area . and even some seating Re: Pergola built.... photos! 23Aug 11, 2013 9:27 am Thanks 1rocky. Good idea to use the old decking to make some screening - we will try to get some use out of it one way or another. As it is now, we don't really need screening as we have put up some fence extenders and the driveway is a step or two down. But.... if we decked across to the fence at the same height as existing deck, close to the fence we would just about be peering over - or see tops of heads or whatever. So, we would either deck a step lower - which we were going to do but decided to just do it in stages to get a feel of things as we go along. The only downfall with that is that going down a step means you lose a lot of space - for eg, you can't put furniture close too close to either edge - and you have to allow space for the step etc etc. I'd love it to be one big - one level - deck, but probably just won't work in our situation. Having seen this new decking area, I think I am leaning towards more decking though, rather than paving down that side?????? Re: Pergola built.... photos! 25Aug 11, 2013 10:05 am PaulMac Looking good, just need to edit your post and put the pics under each other rather than beside each other. From what I see, they are under each other?? And when I was cutting/pasting the links, the links are all under each other - not one continuous run - so not sure how I would change anything even if I had to?? Re: Pergola built.... photos! 27Aug 11, 2013 10:27 am Thanks, but like I said, that's exactly how they looked on my computer so not sure what you did, or what I had done differently? Re: Pergola built.... photos! 28Aug 11, 2013 10:40 am How Hard Can it Be Thanks, but like I said, that's exactly how they looked on my computer so not sure what you did, or what I had done differently? If you look at the code in your post you have mixed IMG code with URL code, the second and third image wont work. Re: Pergola built.... photos! 29Aug 11, 2013 10:47 am Hmmm - strange. Thanks.... but still not sure because it was working for me (In the past on the rare occasion that I do post photos, it usually lets me cut/paste the 'img' link - but this time around when I cut paste the link, it actually produced the photos themselves). Anyways, alls well that ends well . Re: Pergola built.... photos! 30Aug 11, 2013 11:21 pm The deck looks good there is hardly any shading, it looks like a nice spot to sit outside on a sunny winters day. I stayed at a house in Adelaide that had a deck that was facing west so would have been very hot in summer and they had a system of overhead blinds that were a bit like holland blinds except they were horizontal. Around the outside of the deck they had ziptrack blinds that were brilliant you could lower or raise them to any position and they just stay there. If I knew how to put links in i could send you to the stayz site where they are listed with photos of the deck. Re: Pergola built.... photos! 31Aug 12, 2013 9:17 pm Thanks dreamin... No, no shading during winter which is what i want to hold on to. I would love to check out the photos you are talking about Just cut and put the link into your post (sometimes it doesn't appear to work as an actual link in your post, but works after you have posted... If that helps??) HHCIB Re: Pergola built.... photos! 32Aug 14, 2013 9:54 pm I'm very new to all this, if my son was here I would get him to put the link in for me which has made me very lazy about learning how to do anything on the forums other than reply. The best I can do is tell you that the house is on the Stays site at West Lakes, Adelaide, and is called Absolute Beach House. The zip track blinds were great, no matter how windy it was they stay tight in their tracks and didn't flap around. I would love them inside my house if they made them in interior fabrics.
