Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 16, 2013 10:13 pm After weeks of driving us CRAZY with the continual knocking at the lightest hint of wind outside, we have tonight opened up the exhaust fans and discovered THIS in the opening of the duct - Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Being really windy here tonight it is SO loud we just ripped it out or else there would be no way we are going to get an ounce of sleep. Having done a bit of searching on the net it turns out to be a backdraft damper. Is there anything we can do to this so we can put it back and stop the noise or should we just leave it out????? I wish the manufacturers would pay as much attention to things like this as to the aesthetics when designing the things! Re: HELP - toilet exhaust fans continually banging!!!! 3Jul 16, 2013 11:23 pm What exactly does the damper do???? Coz it bangs back and forwards so its letting a draft through anyway so its really pointless as is. Needs to be ever so slightly spring loaded or something that requires a bit more resistance than a puff of wind coming down the duct. Absolutely ridiculous. I kinda think with the way it is its achieving absolutely nothing so why not just leave it out and have no annoying sound!!! Building the Riva by Dale Alcock Homes. Ours only bangs in fairly windy weather and even then its intermmittent rather than constant so perhaps yours needed tightening or something? Re: HELP - toilet exhaust fans continually banging!!!! 5Jul 17, 2013 12:46 pm You need one of these. A Gravity Louvred Duct Vent. They operate on the same principle but as the louvres are smaller than your existing flap they don't make as much noise when the wind gets up. In really strong winds they can still resonate a bit but no where the banging you are getting now. With these though they go on the outside wall and require an in-line exhaust fan or an extractor fan mounted on the inside wall. The other thing is that these flaps ( including your existing one ) will not move if the room they service can be locked as air tight as possible, Shut the door when the room is not in use and if necessary maybe install a draught excluder along the bottom of the door. Well, don't use it then. Before removing the old one, though, try propping it open for a fortnight. You should be able to notice just how much it means. Edit: I notice you have already ripped the old one out. Well, try it out for a while and see if it matters. In a well-insulated and airtight (walls, etc.) house there should be a real difference. In the average Australian house with loads of draft and so on, perhaps not so much of a difference, to be honest. Re: HELP - toilet exhaust fans continually banging!!!! 8Jul 18, 2013 8:26 am As a suggestion, could the damper be made slightly heavier by say gluing a very small weight on it to eliminate the flapping?
