Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 15, 2013 1:45 pm Hi guys, Im a Civil Engineer by trade, however its been quite a while since I have done the calcs and wouldnt know the first place to look with regards to finding the required design charts and building standards for QLD. Can someone point me to the right direction regarding obtaining the following: - Design Capacities for pine/hardwood sections (i.e. Posts, Joists and Bearers for different sizes over different spans). - Footing Design requirements for QLD - Design capacities for SHS members. Currently helping a mate finish his 7x3m suspended deck to which he has connected to the house. I believe the members he has used is well in excess of the requirements, however would like to do some sanity checks for him (Given his reluctance to go through council). His philosophy was to continue the spans of joists and bearers that are used for the top level house, and extrapolate them a further 3m outwards for the deck. He has however used H4 90x90 pine for the support posts. I suggested he look into Galv posts so I would like to calculate a wall thickness he would require so we can price it up. Thanks in advance in reading, and I appreciate your responses. Looks like a great forum filled with knowledge. Regards, Re: Need some help with Deck Design 3Jul 16, 2013 12:13 pm Thanks very much for the response. Yeah I figured I may have to pull out the old Notes, but really thats a last resort haha!! Will check out the BCA and A.Standards. Otherwise its back to the Free Body Diagrams. Cheers Re: Need some help with Deck Design 4Jul 16, 2013 8:39 pm AS 1684 for your timber sizes. The BCA will be a guide, but local knowledge of the soil or a soil test will yield a bigger input regarding soil type. Where abouts are is this located in QLD? If its black soil, you could dig forevr and it will still move, if its weathered rock pretty much bed into it a bit. If you dont want to shell out hundreds of dollars on Standards or the BCA, perhaps you could put together a sketch of your proposed dimensions, or the proposed timber being used and I could detail it for you. If you would rather see the pages for yourself, let me know which items you want, i.e. bearer, joist etc and the proposed timber grade and I could scan them in for you Also dont forget than when a deck for eg is added to the side of a house, the load on the existing house bearer is increased and might need upgrading. A lot of people dont realise this Andrew Re: Need some help with Deck Design 5Jul 16, 2013 9:32 pm Have a look at this link http://theownerbuildernetwork.com.au/Ho ... ks0306.pdf The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get !
