Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jun 20, 2013 8:39 am My house windows need to be wiped every day multiple times in this cooler weather. I get pools of water on my glass and sills. Is this normal of newer houses? Re: Condensation on windowsills 2Jun 20, 2013 3:58 pm I think it is normal, my house is 9 years old and it gets that every day during the colder weather, it gets quite annoying wiping all the windows, and the condensation has a horrible fishy vinegar sort of smell, I don't know why Re: Condensation on windowsills 4Jun 20, 2013 5:31 pm I meant on the insides of my Aluminium windows. I have to wipe off the water so the windowsills don't get water damage to them from the pooling water or paint peeling off and my house is just over 1 yr old. Re: Condensation on windowsills 6Jun 20, 2013 5:44 pm Condensation in a building occurs when warm air comes into contact with a cold surface. The air is cooled below its saturation point causing its excess water vapour to change into liquid water. The condensed water usually appears as water droplets or water film on non-absorbent surfaces such as windows or tiles. This form of condensation is SURFACE CONDENSATION. It is obvious and always occurs on the surfaces which are at or below the dew point of the air immediately adjacent. What does this mean? You have moisture in your home, when the temperature outside is below the dew point, water is deposited on the cold surfaces (glass). No amount of additional insulation in walls or ceiling will change this. The only things that will improve this is is either reducing the amount of water in the air in your home by ventilating shower recesses and laundries, weatherproofing or the removal of the cold surface (by double glazing). But nothing can guarantee that you will not have condensation, in a warm steamy bathroom, the water even condenses on the timber surfaces.
