We were only able to afford standard ceramic tiles in our current place and they crack and chip so easily. And they are freezing to walk on. Getting either bamboo or timber laminate in new build Building the Porter Davis Dunedin 29 maybe, thinking of forfeiting deposit and going with CH or UE Re: BAMBOO VS TILES!! THE FIGHT IS ON! EXPERIENCES PLEASE! 4Jun 04, 2013 10:30 am I personally like timber/bamboo flooring, however we have porcelain tiles at our place (missus choice). I'm getting use to them and I think they look great as well. The only thing with tiles is you need to seal the grout for easy clean later on. The tiles itself are very easy to clean and adds a very modern touch to the house. We chose a beige/cream color, which gives the house warmth. Re: BAMBOO VS TILES!! THE FIGHT IS ON! EXPERIENCES PLEASE! 5Jun 04, 2013 10:57 am Tiles I love the look of. We had white porcelain tiles installed in our last house Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We made sure that before we walked on the tiles we sealed the grout. Yes it was a pain, but the grout was white and it was so easy to clean the grout after. I dont think tiles are cold to walk on and they are hard wearing and great for cleaning when you have pets and kids. We had laminate in the house before we installed the tiles. It was TERRIBLE. I was a very expensive laminate (we didnt put it in) and it never looked clean, no matter how much you cleaned it. It scratched easily, and you couldnt wet it too much to clean it as it could swell. We are just about to hand over with our new house and the white porcelain tiles are being laid again. EXPERIENCES PLEASE! 6Jun 04, 2013 8:58 pm Thanks everyone for your answers! Jen1977 your house is lovely! The tiles look great! That was my concern, the 'coldness' of it and cleaning! I currently have natural timber in my rental and I do like it but after having it for the last 18 years I'm looking for a change in the new place and it will also be cheaper. How do u tell the difference between good quality and poor quality bamboo or tiles? Re: BAMBOO VS TILES!! THE FIGHT IS ON! EXPERIENCES PLEASE! 7Jun 04, 2013 9:07 pm We have bamboo floors...and I love them. You will hear a lot of scare mongering with bamboo, but I think this is from people that got cheap and nasty from random Chinese factories and tried to install themselves. It all depends on your house too....some tiles look stunning and really suit the house. My Thread viewtopic.php?f=31&t=63545 Re: BAMBOO VS TILES!! THE FIGHT IS ON! EXPERIENCES PLEASE! 8Jun 04, 2013 10:15 pm We've got kempas wood floors at the moment, and they're lovely. But for our new build (at bricks stage now) we're having italian tiles. They're not high shine porcelain (which also look delish!), but a natural stone look tile, complete with mottled marbling and lots of veins - the effect is almost slate-like. They're pretty gorgeous - see pictures below. The same tile will feature throughout the entire house, though in varying sizes appropriate to the space: Large 550x550 throughout main living areas, smaller in the wet areas and mosaic up the shower walls... Not an experience as such, but more so it's me just giving you ideas that you may not have thought of. That said, bamboo is stunning! THE FIGHT IS ON! EXPERIENCES PLEASE! 9Jun 05, 2013 11:33 am I had bamboo flooring installed in one house I had. I liked the bright clean look of the bamboo and the finish is excellent. But as much as they claimed the flooring wouldn't dent, it did in one place when the fridge was rolled over it. I'd still prefer wood flooring over tile in most cases, but you also have to take into account your area (climate) and personal taste. Tiles can most certainly be cold on cold days! I think quality of bamboo flooring is all down to the finish that is applied. So do some research between companies, so you know what to look for on the packs. Re: BAMBOO VS TILES!! THE FIGHT IS ON! EXPERIENCES PLEASE! 10Jun 06, 2013 11:12 am We have tiles all throughout our current home, everywhere besides the bedrooms. Pros: Easy to keep clean with pets, my allergies and sinuses don't suffer nearly as much as when we had mostly carpet and it does give a lovely open, streamlined look. Cons: Very cold underfoot, great in summer - winter not so much. Anything you drop will most likely shatter on impact, I am quite clumsy and drop fragile items regularly, however some things lived to tell the tale when I had wooden floors, tiles... not one survivor yet. Its really a personal decision as you can see, some love it, some hate it and others are indifferent about it - like me. Had laminated boards in my first house. They werent of a really good quality and sounded so hollow and werent looking too crash hot after a few years, but I've seem gorgeous ones laid in friends and families homes that suffer none of those issues. We are going for Bamboo in the new home, just because we are moving to the Adelaide Hills, it gets a bit chilly up there in winter and the style we are going for is quite earthy. Bamboo is environmentally sustainable, the ARC branded boards are a high quality and very thick - the ones we have chosen have a slight weathering/distressing already, so if we do dent them, it wont stick out. Good luck with your choice, I'm sure no matter what, It'll look great Thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=66299 Slab: 16/6/14 Frame: 4/7/14 Roof: 22/7/14 Lock Up: 20/8/14 Fixing: 26/8/14 PCI: 9/10/14 Handover: 20/10/14 Re: BAMBOO VS TILES!! THE FIGHT IS ON! EXPERIENCES PLEASE! 11Jun 06, 2013 11:35 am Our Bamboo floors are Arc - here are some pics. Had them for nearly 2 months so I guess it's hards to tell how they'll stand up long term. So far so good. We have a crazy cat running up down and he hasn't left scratch marks. I also wore stilletoes on them the other day and they didn't den't. (You can replace individual boards if they are damaged). The thing with ARC brand is they are designed to be clicked in place, if they are not installed correctly they can lift or warp (I think other brands are designed to be glued down??). The mosaic looks just what I was considering for our kitchen splash back but I haven't been able to find where these kinds of tiles are available or what they're called. Can you please share? And Jen I've admired your tiles before - can you please tell me how you sealed your grout? If you got it done professionally was it expensive? Thanks! Sorry for the thread hijack! :s Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65085 Re: BAMBOO VS TILES!! THE FIGHT IS ON! EXPERIENCES PLEASE! 13Jun 07, 2013 9:50 pm We had the same dilemma and we've gone with bamboo flooring. No matter what your floors are (except carpet) they all dent! they all scratch! My hubby did more research than me, I just love the look of the timber/bamboo flooring and we're building on the coast so it adds a natural feel to the home. Bamboo flooring is stronger and thicker than timber flooring and to make it better, just upgrade your underlay! Re: BAMBOO VS TILES!! THE FIGHT IS ON! EXPERIENCES PLEASE! 14Jun 08, 2013 6:52 am Quote: And Jen I've admired your tiles before - can you please tell me how you sealed your grout? If you got it done professionally was it expensive? Thanks! We did It twice ourselves. You can buy a spray on which is just an aerosol can and we did the whole floor. You can also buy a paint on one, where you paint all the grout lines. We did this in the high traffic areas. Takes a bit of time, but worth it. My decision is still not finalised! Can the people who went bamboo tell me what are the best brands, and what feautures I should be looking for? Not inclined to get cheap imports. Thanks Emily Re: BAMBOO VS TILES!! THE FIGHT IS ON! EXPERIENCES PLEASE! 16Jun 10, 2013 4:12 pm emilygjj Can the people who went bamboo tell me what are the best brands, and what feautures I should be looking for? Not inclined to get cheap imports. Thanks Emily We went with ARC, just make sure they are installed correctly, they need to be clicked in place, not glued down. We had looked a Bamboozle (I think they are only in WA) they are meant to be very good, but a little to pricey for us. My Thread viewtopic.php?f=31&t=63545 Re: BAMBOO VS TILES!! THE FIGHT IS ON! EXPERIENCES PLEASE! 17Jun 10, 2013 10:03 pm Hi emilygjj We have had first hand experience with both flooring types - having owner built homes with both tiles and bamboo flooring installed. With both houses we installed the products ourselves. Our previous owner build home we had 8 years - had porcelain tiles throughout wet areas, hallways, dining and kitchen. Found them very durable, easy to clean, though freezing cold and hard underfoot. Tended to wear slippers in winter to compensate. Extremely hardy with dog claws and kids. Our current new owner build has bamboo flooring installed, throughout dining, kitchen and hallways which we purchased through Harvey Norman..... their 'Naturally Bamboo' flooring. We chose to blend 3 of their colours - the Natural, Carbonised and Antique. Harvey Norman were fantastic...especially seeing though we live in country Vic not near a HN store. The visited us in home with all the product samples (carpet too) so we didn't have to make the long trip to a showroom. We have been in the new house 9 months now and so far love the bamboo flooring. Much, much warmer underfoot in winter than tiles. Not as hard underfoot either. Seems to be pretty hard wearing too. So far the dog claws haven't left any marks. It gives it more of a professional and modern look, I used to have floorboards but made the change and have been happy since. Re: BAMBOO VS TILES!! THE FIGHT IS ON! EXPERIENCES PLEASE! 19Dec 13, 2013 5:40 pm We got a sample from http://www.ebay.com.au/usr/dispick who was recommended on the forum a while ago. George wacked it with a hammer, I stood on it in stiletto's and we submerged it in water for half of the night. The hammer left a reasonably small dent (especially for the amount of wack it copped) the stiletto didn't leave a noticable mark and the water raised a little bit of the bamboo. I have tiles in our current house that we're selling. Super easy to clean (except grout) but the new house needs the grounding that only some wood can give it. Today is under construction. Thank you for understanding. Re: BAMBOO VS TILES!! THE FIGHT IS ON!
