Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 29, 2013 8:57 am I can't find anything specific on this though I know it has come up... but what pet door options have people utilised with new builds? In my present house, I have a pet door in the glass of one of the windows; since I plan double-glazed windows in the new house, that isn't an option. Moreover, the existing pet door I have is horribly leaky - cold air comes pouring through in winter, and the magnets aren't strong enough to hold against a decent wind, meaning it blows half open and lets in even more cold air! No way will I try that one again. Looking at my new house, if I don't put a pet door through a window or the sliding door, then it will have to go through the wall. Are there issues doing this? Are there pet door options for brick walls that will not be super drafty? Alternatively, I've come up with the idea of putting a pet door in the laundry (external swing door with security screen door) and a pet door in the internal laundry door. I guess the internal door one should be doable without problems (although I might get more washing machine noise in my living area. Gah.) but I will want to have a pet door in the external door and it's screen that work together or when just the screen is open... Does one like that even exist? And is using the laundry as an air lock going to resolve the draft issues? Size wise, I've got a cat and will probably have a medium sized dog. Ideas? Pictures? General comments? Perhaps if you talk to the builder you could arrange to upgrade to one - should not be much price increase. In our current house we do not have a screen door on the laundry, just a standard hinged door - we bought a pet flap and installed it into door ourselves afer we moved in - easy DIY job with a basic jigsaw. So you could easily line it up with the screen door one. I dont have a pet flap on any internal doors - we just leave internal laundry door open, our laundry is well away from living areas so this is not a problem for us. But could easily be done if you wanted to. I know nothing about pet flaps in walls or glass windows/doors - is one of the reasons we chose a hinged external door on the laundry. As it happens, I do have a pic of the door in action Watch closely, very exciting Re: Pet door options 3May 31, 2013 6:06 pm Have you thought about these? http://www.patiolink.com.au/ http://www.australianpetshop.com.au/shop/dog_doors/patio_door.php Build #2 Builder: In-Vogue Design: Custom 2 Storey Build #1 Builder: New Generation Homes Design: The Monterey My Build Thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=60453 Re: Pet door options 4May 31, 2013 6:59 pm We've got one of those patio link style insert pet doors because we couldn't decide where to put a pet door in the new house. A strong wind blows it open but most pet doors I've seen have that problem. It works okay, we have it in the games room so it's not in the main living areas where the draft factor would be an issue. I think most pet doors are drafty but it's a small price to pay for not having to get up umpteen times to let the dog out. Re: Pet door options 5Jun 06, 2013 11:25 am We had the same dilemma. Our window manufacturer installed the doggy door into the aluminium frame of our laundry door. So we have a toughened glass laundry door (also BAL40 requirement) with a glass side panel made the width of the doggy door. Luckily we only have a small dog so the width was just enough to fit the doggy door into. We considered it early in the planning phase - but not early enough. Pure luck it fitted but it works really well. It can be closed off at night with a sliding panel and we also shut the laundry door when its cold. 920 was enough to get the furniture in.
