We need to replace the balustrade but this will cost lots of $$$ so we would like to have the whole deck and supports assessed to give us an understanding of it's overall condition/safety/longevity. We only moved in 2 years ago, deck is ok but we aren't experienced enough to know how many years before would need replacement. There are some rusted steel supports which concern me as well. We are concerned about spending money on lovely new balustrade and then in 2 years pulling down to replace the whole lot!! Do we need a structural engineer or should a builder be able to inspect this for us?? Feeling frustrated that the builders we've contacted haven't the engineering knowhow to assess the structural aspects and the engineers seem not to be able to assess the timber deck.
