I am going to put a gate across my driveway and am planning on building the columns using 2 cement blocks side by side alternating direction with each course and then rendering. I plan on anchoring the blocks to the driveway using rebar through the entire column and filling the columns with concrete. I do have a few questions though. The first is... could I get away with simply dry stacking the blocks? They are going to be filled with reinforced concrete and I can't imaging the mortar would add much strength. The second question is a method I've come across called dry stacking with surface bonding cement. Basically, you dry stack and simply render with a cement + shredded fiberglass mixture. It is supposedly as strong as mortared construction. Does anyone have any experience with this? Cheers. 4 3730 To my understanding early saw cuts are to control shrinkage cracks, so doing them now would be pointless. Control joints may reduce ugly cracking during periods of soil… 3 9858 |
