Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 09, 2013 12:56 pm How big do you reckon the minor bedrooms should be? For us they will be occupied by a child from infant to teenager (that's the plan anyway). Because we want to add a linen cupboard it looks like our smallest will be 3.0x3.28. Is that too small do you think? The others will be 3.6x3.3 and 3.4x3.1. These figures exclude the built in robe (i.e. it's floorspace only). Re: Minor bedroom size? 2Sep 09, 2013 1:38 pm Our smallest bedroom is 3.0 x 3.0. It is my sewing room, so no beds etc in there. The other 2 kids bedrooms are 3.0 x 3.38 and they are a fine size. In my daughters bedroom we have a queen size bed, a desk and an ikea 2 x 4 expedit unit on its side and there is still plenty of room Modified Fernside 38 Rawson Homes Blog: http://www.thehousethatmatandjenbuilt.blogspot.com Build Thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=60501 Re: Minor bedroom size? 3Sep 09, 2013 5:09 pm Don't make bedrooms too big you want to encourage your children to come out of their rooms and socialise. Re: Minor bedroom size? 4Sep 10, 2013 8:40 am Honestly, I was shocked how small the bedrooms are in Australia... my kids loved to have friends over, also over night... in most of the bedrooms there would have been no space for a spare bed or having a Carrera or model railway to be set up. Just don't put a computer or TV in the bedrooms and your kids will come out! We decided to have our bedrooms at least 3,5x4 m big. I feel claustrophibic in these small bedrooms... Re: Minor bedroom size? 5Sep 10, 2013 9:23 am Ours are terribly small 2.6x2.8! We have a small block and to get bigger bedrooms would have really reduced out kitchen/living/dining. I've seen other houses on the same sized block and to get the big minor bedrooms they are lucky if they can fit a 6 seater table and a three seater couch in the living room.... We don't have kids yet so we know for at least the first 5 years it won't be too much of an issue and we will have the space in the living room for them to play. I think if you can fit a bed, draws and a desk it will be big enough. Having the extra storage will be very helpful in making sure things can be out away and found easily... But you probably need to work out what will be best for you. Good luck Re: Minor bedroom size? 6Sep 10, 2013 9:24 am bashworth Don't make bedrooms too big you want to encourage your children to come out of their rooms and socialise. There are some more thought on my blog at: http://www.anewhouse.com.au/2013/09/childrens-bedrooms/ Sometimes, peace and quiet from them staying in their bedrooms is much more valuable y'know! Personally, 3m x 3m is too small for me. OK for a small child, but very cramped for a teen or adult. But remember, it is also the layout - door/window/robe positions - that makes a big difference in the flexibility of the space. My current house has 3.2x3.5 minor bedrooms, and they work much better than the 3x3 in the previous house. 4 Land settled May '14. But new house we wanted their rooms bigger for long term so they are 3.1x4m Re: Minor bedroom size? 8Sep 10, 2013 2:46 pm If they have a built in - I'd say at least 3.3 x 3.3. We made ours bigger - and put an ensuite in one ... The ensuite was surprisingly less than we thought - I guess because it was able to be done from the start. Re: Minor bedroom size? 9Sep 10, 2013 3:19 pm Exactly my thoughts, and probably only issue with our floor plan so far(we haven't started building yet) All our minor bedrooms are 3.2X3.2 excluding WIRs (approx. 1.3X1.3 all of them). I am still wondering whether that'd be enough for our kids 1 and 6 yo. Sorry couldn't be much help but thought I would let you know that I am in the same boat. Re: Minor bedroom size? 10Sep 10, 2013 9:52 pm My daughter's room is the smallest in our house and is also 3.0 x 3.3 (and then a WIR) and I think the floorspace is great. In the display home the room had a double bed, two bedsides and some little couch cushions and there was still heaps of room to move. Building the Leabrook with Fairmont Homes in Mallala, SA.
