Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 09, 2013 10:31 pm Hi guys.. I recently purchased a newly built house (bought after completion). Been in here about 6 months, and the house was probably completed 6+ months before that (selling/settlement process etc). I believe I am the first proper occupant. Unfortunately, I am starting to be driven nuts by the noise on the 2nd floor .. ie creaking, floor movement under my feet as I walk around. It is all carpeted upstairs apart from the bathrooms. Unfortunately, I didn't notice this before purchasing. Is this something I should pursue the builder over? If so, will I have trouble seeing as I was not the original customer? If not, is this something I can get someone in to help rectify? Re: New house, noisy 2nd floor (should builder fix it?) 2Apr 10, 2013 2:02 am It sounds like not enough attention was paid to sound-proofing the floor and I doubt if you have any comeback on the builder or previous owner, as I suspect the downstairs ceilings will have to be pulled down to rectify it Arfur Re: New house, noisy 2nd floor (should builder fix it?) 3Apr 10, 2013 7:49 am Thanks. I accept that the sound proofing I'll have to live with. However, in terms of creaks of the floor boards under the carpet.. that seems like a common issue. Do I just need to find something like this? http://www.123itsdone.com/squeeeeek-no-more-kit.html Re: New house, noisy 2nd floor (should builder fix it?) 4Apr 10, 2013 10:36 am I would say most squeaks are a result of the joist moving in in any metal hanging brackets. I house that young shouldnt be squeaking on the flooring nails Is it throughout the whole area or just certain spots. If its the movement in the hanging brackets it will be a hard issue to resolve without removing the carpet or ceiling below. By all means discuss with the builder, if they dont want to be helpfull atleast ask for the designed floor system layout which will show joist and hanging bracket locations. From this you will be able to work out if the squeaks are in the location of the metal brackets. If this is the case I would claim to them that they didnt use sufficient nails in the hanging brackets The change in seasons can usually bring on the squeaking which is why you may not have noticed before Also ask if the floor was nailed or screwed, also ask if it was glued 18 90424 Hi, I have a double and whenever the wind picks up I can hear alot of banging in certain areas of the house.
