Never put soil or anything else (eg mulch) higher than the weepholes in the bricks (I'm assuming you have a brick home) and don't let water pool anywhere next to the slab. I was given a brochure with illustrations by my builder at handover which had some do's and don'ts of putting gardens around your home.
