Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 21, 2008 12:53 pm I'm just curious guys... would this be the norm?
We are looking into DIY paving/decking our alfresco area and noticed that our slab actually jutts out from under the wall brickwork. Now as the protuding edges of the slab are all rough we will need to get a tonne of sand in so we can raise the height up and level it before we can even think of paving. Also if we go the decking route, i was hoping to be able to attach the ledgr to the slab so we have more room for the bearers/joists etc, but i'm not sure how this would work with the slab edge being uneven. So anyways this got me wondering, is it normal for you to have an excess amount of slab jutting out from under your brickwork... i would have though your bricks would sit flush against the edge of the slab ? Can anyone shed some light on this subject?? It is much better to have a slab thats a little big than one thats a little small which needs additional work to properly support the frame or brickwork!! Built Porter Davis "Dromana" 2007. Too much is safer than too little.... However what would you call a 'little big'? 10cms? Re: Slab protruding from underneath brickwork?? 5Apr 30, 2008 7:43 pm This is neither normal nor unusual. Cryptic I know but as it would be good practice to ensure that the slab edge was actually under the ground so you never see it, it probably occurs more than we all realise.
Be careful that you don't over fill with the sand and paving. You need to keep about 75mm of 'freeboard' from external ground level to the inside slab level. That means that if your paving floods, the water won't flood inside your house! If it were me I would pack the sand to just above the slab edge. You could probably jackhammer the edge off anyway as it is unlikely to have any reinforcement in that location - but don't get too carried away. Feel free to scan your engineering drawing (if you have it) and post it here if you want us to have a look! Builders are people too.... Re: Slab protruding from underneath brickwork?? 6May 02, 2008 10:21 pm Hi there,
I had the same problem at my place, and i just got a guy in with a concrete cutter, and had him cut away all the extras around the house. He actually did a lot of it with a jack hammer. Not sure if thats a concreter problem, or a brickie problem. Nonetheless, we had it fixed up ... at our own expense. Re: Slab protruding from underneath brickwork?? 7Jun 02, 2008 6:14 pm Thanks for the info everyone. I think i exagerated a little bit... looking over it again, the slab doesn't quite protrude 10cms. But as you can see with the pictures its rather jagged, unlevel and does jutt out a wee bit.

Long story but i did manage to do just this and inadvertently a very small section of the slab underneath the brickwork....is this something that should i should be concerned about? Re: Slab protruding from underneath brickwork?? 8Jun 02, 2008 6:24 pm If you could break it off then it was probably just a bit of spillage over the formwork anyway - my feeling is that there is no need for concern at all.
The small bit under the brickwork will be OK as the bricks share the load very well by the time they get to the slab. If you are worried then post another picture of it. Builders are people too.... The most likely cause of your timber swelling (parquetry?) is either a plumbing leak or carelessly leaving water on floors after use or both.
