Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Mar 15, 2013 10:45 pm Hey. We just picked up a bunch of led downlights for our house. We don't really know how these things work, but we were surprised when we noticed they had a standard power point plug.. the builder has obviously only pulled some cables to the spots where the downlights are supposed to go and I assumed he would simply wire the cables directly to the downlight. Anyway, is this going to be a problem? Will they install a powerpoint at each downlight and charge us extra for it? The cabling has already been down and the internal ceiling/walls are all up. The led light in question is the Atom 13w. It has a cable that plugs in to a box ("dimmable led driver") and the box has a cable with a standard powerpoint. You can see photos of these items in the link below. http://www.lightingillusions.com.au/sho ... -downlight We are just curious what is going on and whether there is cause for concern or if this is perfectly normal. Thought I'd ask for advice before bothering builder as we we have already bothered them a lot lately with different things Not sure if we'd be able to return the lights, but probably easier to do sooner rather than later (picked up lights today). Re: Downlight with powerpoint? Will we have issues with inst 2Mar 16, 2013 10:56 am It is quite common for down lights to have plugs. There is a special unswitched power point available (Clipsal part 413, but there are other brands). It is advantageous having these sockets in your ceiling as you can then swap over lights in the future without needing an electrician. The labour involved in wiring a 413 is about the same as hard-wiring a downlight, so it shouldn't cost any more on that front. The 413 socket itself is about $5, so you may need to pay extra for those. Paul Re: Downlight with powerpoint? Will we have issues with inst 3Mar 17, 2013 10:23 am If we had known then what we know now, would have had our lights installed WITH a plug and not hardwired. We had a light "fail to proceed" a week or two after moving in and for the first time in my life, had to get an electrician to change the light. Covered by 5 yr. warranty thank goodness, and apparently, not a frequent occurrence thank goodness. But we have about 20+ led downlights so not looking forward to 5 years time !! Re: Downlight with powerpoint? Will we have issues with inst 4Mar 17, 2013 10:33 am Yes - easier to install replacements - by you. Cost - maybe $10 - give or take $5. Depends on numbers and electrician. BUT - if you cut off the plug and hard wire you might void warranty. So be careful. Re: Downlight with powerpoint? Will we have issues with inst 5Mar 18, 2013 6:30 am Also - dimmable with gimble is not that much more. Re: Downlight with powerpoint? Will we have issues with inst 6Mar 20, 2013 9:08 am There will be a little bit more labour and parts involved in installing points for every downlight. They will just a non-switching point in the roof. And have it switch at the wall as normal. The electrician should provide you with a certificate of compliane as well. That's a fantastic result! Happy you got it sorted out. cheers Simeon 6 8640 I am looking at building a house. Has anyone used Construkt Homes (based in Adelaide)? Does anyone have experience with this builder? 0 6450 12 5320 |
