Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 18, 2008 11:27 am Our builder (M) has told us that we can have a cavity sliding door to close the family room so we can use it as a home theatre. Likewise in the master bedroom where we want some sliding doors to close when we are using the bathroom and open when no one is using it.
We are looking at timber cavity sliding doors in both cases. Does anyone have pictures as i have no idea what it looks like..? Thanks, Ann Re: Cavity Sliding Doors 2Apr 18, 2008 11:44 am Welcome to the forum, we like to share and we like pictures...

Just picture the frame the door is sitting in being covered in plasterboard - the door disappears into the wall. We're using a couple in our yet-to-be-built house for space reasons.

Judie Ahhhh i get it now, thanks, good idea. But then how does it work if you have a 2m + width space to close. You would then need two fixed panels on the two extremities to hide the door? Re: Cavity Sliding Doors 6Apr 18, 2008 7:15 pm You can get cavity doors up to 920mm in width, so it just means close that 2m opening to 1840... Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me... And keen owner builder... Mainly the building part!! I think they are great - especially for closing off hallways. The house I'm building now has a hallway leading to the bedrooms and the entrance to the hallway didn't have a door on it. I wanted the ability to close the hallway off so if I have guests (or have children one day ) I can close the door and continue to watch tv in my living room without disturbing anyone who is sleeping. So I requested a cavity door. Putting a normal door in would have been awkward as far as opening the door (not much room) but the cavity door just slides out of the way. Chris Chris I have lived with cavity sliders for 14 years and never once had a problem with dust in them. Maybe I just havent looked Or cleaned in them. You dont need to clean in them do you? You really cant get to the inside... Paula Re: Cavity Sliding Doors 11Apr 18, 2008 8:43 pm You can take off the top panel and take the door off……if you felt it necessary!
I just close the doors and run the duster over the doors occasionally. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Cavity Sliding Doors 12Apr 18, 2008 9:58 pm Thanks everyone.
Sorry something is still not clear. If the space to close is say 2m by 1.5m(just an approximate measurement as i don't have exact measurements on me), does the cavity doors open all the way or do they stay partly closed? Re: Cavity Sliding Doors 13Apr 18, 2008 10:03 pm Quote: does the cavity doors open all the way or do they stay partly closed? They should meet in the middle to be fully closed, then open up so the doors are almost all the way in the wall (need a bit out to grab). I have a question (which quite possibly shows my ignorance ) but, given that these doors hang from the ceiling, do they dampen the noise between the rooms as well as normal doors? BTW Michelle great photos as usual. Re: Cavity Sliding Doors 16Apr 19, 2008 7:37 am Paula They should meet in the middle to be fully closed, then open up so the doors are almost all the way in the wall (need a bit out to grab). Spend the extra $20 and get flush pull retracted cavities. These finish flush with the wall as their name suggests, and you have neat little handle onthe end of the door for pulling them closed. Re: Cavity Sliding Doors 17Apr 19, 2008 8:45 am Can I add a question, while we're on the subject ?
I'd ike to add a cavity door between the kitchen/family room & living, to stop kitchen noise from moving down the hall. Does the cavity have to be deeper/thicker(?) than a normal cavity in order to accomodate the door & the associated joinery ? In other words do I have to specify to the builder that I want a deeper cavity for future installation of a cavity door? Paula Re: Cavity Sliding Doors 19Apr 19, 2008 8:54 am Sorry guys.........just thought of another question
Can the doors be changed at a later date for something fancier than the standart flush panels? Thanks Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Cavity Sliding Doors 20Apr 19, 2008 9:23 am Southies Sorry guys.........just thought of another question Can the doors be changed at a later date for something fancier than the standart flush panels? Thanks Yep..the are just hung differently....notice Michelle's post there are ones with glass panes. The one I posted has the four panel doors - our house has a combination of standard hand and sliding four panel doors - but all the same door.. Friend's of ours renovated an older house and found some really nice timber framed glass doors with an "art deco" etched pattern, and converted them to cavity.
