Browse Forums General Discussion Re: Gas VS Electric Hot Water System 21Mar 17, 2013 9:15 am I guess I'm asking someone who has solar - and has offpeak 33. Does the solar have a booster ? Is there an issue I should consider - ie water will be cool until 10am each morning etc ? Re: Gas VS Electric Hot Water System 22Mar 18, 2013 11:03 am I have solar with electric boost on T31. We have no issues with running out of hot water, but we have a 325L tank and are a three person household. I run the booster maybe three times per year, during the coldest days in winter and if we have a week of rain. We generally shower in the morning (latest 7am) and the water is still hot from the previous day, the tank is well insulated. Having said that I live in Central Queensland, I imagine the booster would need to run more often in say Victoria. When you say "you" run the booster - is it automatic, or do you have to switch it on ? We shower in the morning too. I'll be in SEQ - coast - so shouldn't get below 10 too often. Our tank is over 300 too. Our solar panels are facing due north so should get maximum return. Re: Gas VS Electric Hot Water System 24Mar 18, 2013 1:53 pm We run it manually by flicking the switch in the meter box on or off as required. We can tell when we need to switch it on when we do the dishes in the evening, if the water's not hot enough then we go and flick the booster on. Everyone also needs to be aware that electric storage hot water units are going to be near "illegal" for new builds/renovations in many states soon and buying a replacement unit for a dead system will be near impossible down the track. who told you this, origin just was giving out $100 gift cards for anyone who converted their hot water system to tariff 33... It's all part of the grand plan to have us all living in caves with no electricity and definitely no hot water. See this link:- http://www.climatechange.gov.au/what-yo ... t-faq.aspx See items 21 and 22.[/quote] TinaG is correct and this is about the government trying to phase out electrical hot water system, nothing to do with off-peak power. however living in a cave would be cool during summer and warm during winter... Re: Gas VS Electric Hot Water System 26Mar 18, 2013 4:11 pm Saint Mike I guess I'm asking someone who has solar - and has offpeak 33. Does the solar have a booster ? Is there an issue I should consider - ie water will be cool until 10am each morning etc ? Just to back up what TinaG said, mine is a 350 liter tank and i have only turned it on once in 6 months, that is with 3 people having showers a day... Does the unit have an auto on for the boost system - or do you need to switch it on yourself ? I find it odd they don't have a thermostat built in ? Re: Gas VS Electric Hot Water System 28Mar 19, 2013 11:56 am Our solar hot water has a booster ( electric) which can be manually overridden-it is currently set to utilise offpeak tariff between 11pm & 7am. A-ha !!! So its on, but you can turn it off ? Is it controlled by a thermostat which you can set to a temp ? Would you turn it off if you felt you could make do with the occasional cooler hot water ... Re: Gas VS Electric Hot Water System 30Mar 19, 2013 12:00 pm No thermostat that I know of....and considering that our last electricity bill was only $50 for a fully electric house and we had 30+ people here over the course of 6 days for Christmas at this point I'm happy to let it do it's thing! Great. Our place - which is due for competion very very soon ... has a solar hot water system and solar electric. We'll have all LED lighting and a perfect north aspect. Insulation etc etc. So I'm just trying to work it all out. If I'm happy with the solar HW it looks likely I can turn off the booster - on our 315L system. We will have a pool but it will have the pump etc which is energy efficient I'm told. I see we can have the T33 on either the solar HW or pool power - but not both. Not sure if this is true. But would T31 be better - ie cheaper AND more workable ? Re: Gas VS Electric Hot Water System 32Mar 19, 2013 3:38 pm T31 is on for fewer hours than T33, which for water heating is fine. I think my booster does have a thermostat, but I would rather use my own judgement and run it less frequently. Nope i have a switch that allows me to turn the booster on or off. However when the water is at the right temp, the booster turnes its self off... You can have more then one device running on off peak tariff, there is no reason why you cant run hot water and also pool on the off peak power. Re: Gas VS Electric Hot Water System 35Mar 19, 2013 4:25 pm OK - thanks. I read somewhere that some pools couldn't be on OP due to the nature of their pumps etc. Re: Gas VS Electric Hot Water System 36Mar 19, 2013 5:00 pm Saint Mike OK - thanks. I read somewhere that some pools couldn't be on OP due to the nature of their pumps etc. I know there are requirements as to what you can or cant install on OP. However as far as i know it is more the nature of the electrical device, IE: you cant install Lights on OP but you can put pumps for pools and alike on it. Re: Gas VS Electric Hot Water System 37Mar 21, 2013 3:09 pm I was thinking they might need to go at certain times. But intend looking into it. I’d go heat pump, efficient and you can have a large storage tank so you don’t run out. If the house is big it can take a while for the water to run hot. I was lucky… 1 346 I want to build a decking to the drawn shape outlined in black. The problem is how close can I build to the gas hot water unit? Will I be able to build around it and be… 0 20230 the sun master is the solar heating to "warm" the water in the tank the S26 is your hot water system which will heat the water (25 degrees?) so with both turned on you… 2 14049 |
