Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Feb 15, 2013 9:01 pm Hi all, we've just had a guy install a timber retaining wall out the front of our house, he's put in drainage pipes in the wall and also a pit in the low point of our front yard. He's just realised the down pipe he was going to connect it to, goes to our water tank. Now obviously we don't want this water going into our tank but the only option seems to be to connect it to the stormwater pit in the middle of our back fence, some 40 odd metres away! We've been trying to come up with a solution but can't think of anything, anyone else have this problem? I have a feeling he'll want more money to take it all the way down the back Re: Where to connect drainage pipes? 2Feb 15, 2013 9:09 pm One way might be a soak well. Re: Where to connect drainage pipes? 3Feb 15, 2013 9:41 pm We are on clay, I read soakwells are no good on clay? What about a length of ag pipe run down the back to let it drain out slowly? Or is that a bit dodge? Re: Where to connect drainage pipes? 4Feb 15, 2013 11:56 pm But the downpipe must have drained somewhere before you diverted it to your tank...surely! Very hard to say anything without photos or being on site. It sounds like you are on a fair sort of a slope. 3in1 Supadiverta. Rainwater Harvesting Best Practice using syphonic drainage. Soakwells aren't great on clay but you won't be dealing with large volumes of water (unlike roof drainage) unless you have got underground springs. The flows are likely to be a minor trickle as most of the water is going to have to seep through the clay behind the wall before it gets to the drain. The ag pipe is another good solution (an easy way of making a small soakwell is to to dig a round hole drop a coil of corrugated aggi pipe into it and fill around with 5mm gravel) Make sure the soakwell is at least a couple of m from the house and the retaining wall.
