Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Feb 14, 2013 10:11 pm We're currently getting a timber retaining wall built and we'd like to paint it woodland grey to match our gutters and facia. What's the best paint to use for the least maintenance? Do we need to undercoat? Cheers Re: What paint for retaining wall? 3Feb 17, 2013 10:37 pm Hi Selina2106, I manage a paint shop in Sydney. There are three ways of coating your timber which will all work. Which method you use depends on whether your timber has been treated and pre-primed. If you are using treated pine sleepers that haven't been pre-primed the recommended coating system is to apply 1 coat of a solvent based primer (oil primer) and leave 24hrs to dry, minimum. Ensure this coat is not sticky before applying two coats of a 100% acrylic top coat such as Wattyl Solaguard. Leave two hours drying time between top coats. Using a water based top coat will make recoating easier and should last up to 10 years, though you may want to freshen it up or change colour sooner... I suggest you check out this link with regard to treated timber: http://www.apmf.asn.au/documents/fact_s ... es_11.html Let me know if you need any more help. I've been sold unsuitable paint in the past so it's great to have an idea before I go in, cheers Re: What paint for retaining wall? 5Feb 18, 2013 9:27 am No problem! BTW, if your timber is not treated or primed then you could just use an exterior acrylic undercoat first, then 2 acrylic top coats OR as long as you're using a self priming top coat, thin down your first coat with 10% water followed by 2 coats without water. Good luck! Thank you again Simeon.. I will call my certifier for that.
