Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Feb 01, 2013 2:40 pm I recently got decking installed 60sqm2, quite a large area. I was so happy with the result. I decided to delay oiling the decking as I was going to get the side wall colorbond finish installed and thought it would be best to oil it after all the job was complete and the tradies all gone. Last week, after a day of rain, I was so shocked to discover my decking had turned black! I got an opinion and was advised that it is the dust particles of the metal from the cuttings. Due to the rain, the particles had permeated into the timber, causing it to turn black. I am absolutely devastated. How can I salvage my decking?? The handyman has offered to hire a sanding machine and sand off the top layer to try get rid of as much of the black as possible. Does anybody out there have any other solutions? Thanks in advance. Re: Merbau decking disaster - Please help!!! 2Feb 01, 2013 5:38 pm You could try cleaning it first. There are specialist deck cleaning products available...worth a try. These are just two... http://cabots.com.au/product-detail/1463/deck-clean http://www.intergrain.com.au/reviva.html I can recommend Reviva - we use it on our decking every year or two before re-oiling. Hi Kek, I sanded my decking and used the Reviva as deck cleaning product - it has helped alot. The black is now around 80% gone...I will do one more time, hopefully will be completely gone. Thanks for suggesting this. Re: Merbau decking disaster - Please help!!! 6Feb 10, 2013 4:34 pm Glad to hear it helped. We've found it to be a really good product. Intergain's decking oil is the bee's knees too. Re: Merbau decking disaster - Please help!!! 7Jul 10, 2020 9:47 pm Keen to know how you got rid of the black. I’ve just had a herringbone merbau done and the trestle table the chippy was cutting on had metal legs that were on the new timber and it’s feet left deep black spots. The timber is still raw and I’m hesitant to oil till the marks are lighter or better yet gone. How did you get rid of yours? Hi, as per the subject. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best value decking oil (Bunning is close to where I live) for a treated pine deck? Thanks 0 10971 Use a product like Equisol's Vitalise to clean the deck then coat with a penetrating timber oil. It will look 10 years younger and add value to your home.
