Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jan 26, 2013 9:52 pm I have a client with a very expensive well layed hardwood timber floor. The tradesmen who installed the floor have left an expansion joint approx 10mm wide that runs from the front to the back of the house at the point where the entrance hall meets the living area. The expansion joint is obviously the depth of the timber, it is noticeable and a dust/ debris trap. Is there a product that can be used to fill the expansion joint that will cope with being in a high traffic area without bulgeing? Cheers Re: Expansion joint in timber floor 2Jan 27, 2013 7:07 am Sounds a bit suss??? Timber is a natural product and will swell and contract but an expansion gap shouldn't be needed in such a prominent place unless you are laying a basketball court!!!! Generally you leave a 10mm gap at the walls (covered by the skirtingboard) to allow for expansion. A smart designer will break up long expanses of timber floors with a change of material or a parquetry feature. Re: Expansion joint in timber floor 3Jan 28, 2013 1:20 pm I have to agree with GT above. I've laid lots of timber floors and have never installed an expansion joint. That is what the 10mm gap at the walls are for. Photos showing the expansion joint or any change of flooring material would help too. Stewie Re: Expansion joint in timber floor 4Jan 29, 2013 9:25 am We were told we had to have an extra expansion joint filled with cork because the room is 7.75m wide, and have to say you forget it is even there. To the left of the bench there is a fridge space and the joint starts there, goes under the island bench then across to the sliding door. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Here is a closeup. Regards, Grumbles To my understanding early saw cuts are to control shrinkage cracks, so doing them now would be pointless. Control joints may reduce ugly cracking during periods of soil… 3 9862 Hi all I need a guidance on how far I need to space expansion joints in the concrete driveway and its type (keyway/foam.)
