Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Dec 15, 2012 12:48 pm hi, i'm new to this forum but need some advice as we are about to build a 7 star energy rated home but our block doesnt have natural gas. we have never lived in a 7 star energy efficient home or had double glazed windows so we dont know the impact this has during our freezing gippsland winters. any suggestions for heating??? is ducted recycling too expensive to run? is one large split system and a few nobo panels better economically? i still want to be able to push a button and get instant heat when i get home from work and then on the weekends we can light the log fire. i really feel the cold and are worried that coming from a gas ducted central heated home i dont want to have warm rooms and freezing bathrooms. help! Re: no natural gas - heating???? 2Dec 15, 2012 1:56 pm I would go for a split system and just warm a couple of living rooms. Reverse cycle air conditioning is about three times more efficient than gas and normal electric heaters. Bit of a waste to warm bedrooms as after you're in bed for 10 minutes, everything's comfortable again. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: no natural gas - heating???? 3Dec 15, 2012 4:20 pm we are looking at 17kw electric reverse cycle ducted ( which i think will be too expensive to run) or 8kw electric split system. we have about 100m2 to heat in our central area. with the cost of electricity i am worried about huge bills but also dont want to freeze! Re: no natural gas - heating???? 4Dec 15, 2012 5:29 pm What is your budget? If you feel the cold like we do ..ex queenslanders...and havnt gone too far down the building route yet have you thought about hydronic? If you are on a rural block even better as wood fired boilers can be very efficent. Re: no natural gas - heating???? 5Dec 18, 2012 9:59 pm Hi bennrach We had the same question several months back when we started to build. Didn't know about the forum at that stage. So we had to just pick and hope for the best. Moved in last Friday, so I really couldn't answer for another year but thought I would let you know what we decided. We have a zoned ducted refrigerated heating and cooling. Heavy duty mitsubishi. We also only had single phase power and other systems needed 3phase power. Due to it being zoned, we don't have to heat or cool the whole house, so this can keep costs down and we went with good insulation, so I think that helps to keep the house cooler or warmer. But just in case the costs do blow out, I installed a gas log fire place which has the capacity to heat my living, kitchen, family room. If I end up using this I will probably just put a oil burner freestanding heater in my bedroom and let the kids suffer. So far love the refrigerated air conditioning, no sticky hot days where you feel muggy. Good luck with what you decide. Hi, planning on using the attached stone pieces in my bathroom.
