Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Dec 12, 2012 9:02 am Hi Everyone. New to the forum and have come specifically looking to ask if anyone has installed one of those new DIY 'illume skylights' that are at Masters? I saw them yesterday in Mornington. It says on the box something about it working on the lower level of double storey houses and not needing a shaft? But it doesn't say how. I don't get much natural light on the lower floor of my place because i'm surrounded by gum trees so I'm wondering if it would suit me because the picture on the box looks like it's pretty bright. Does anyone know how they work and has anyone installed one? Cheers! Re: illume shaftless skylights - Has anyone installed one ye 2Dec 13, 2012 8:29 am Hi Styron, I suggest you have a look at this video on utube before going and buying one of those. They claim it’s the world 1st but in fact the Solaro day has been out for 3 years in USA and 5 months in Australia and is a better product as far as light output and performance. Also Illume offers a year warranty and Solaro Day offers a 25/10 warranty so they are very confident in their products performance. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLsySlis ... e=youtu.be Hope this helps. Re: illume shaftless skylights - Has anyone installed one ye 3Dec 13, 2012 9:19 pm Hi Styron, I purchased an illume from Masters which I installed in a bathroom on the lower level of a two story house, I have got to say these are fantastic, the guys from Masters were very helpful and also excited about this product I suggest you have a chat with them. Installation is soooo easy, took me around 35 mins that included cleaning up !!!! my wife now wants one in the walk in robe as well. I think these are made by an Australian company as well. Re: illume shaftless skylights - Has anyone installed one ye 4Dec 14, 2012 8:57 am Illume is sold by Australian company yes, but made in China then imported. Re: illume shaftless skylights - Has anyone installed one ye 5Dec 14, 2012 11:32 am Hi Guys. Styron, We recently went to look at an attic ladder at the manufacturing plant of Kimberley in Dandenong that makes the illumes. The same showroom as the ladders has illumes on display. You should go have a look for yourself if you are in Melbourne as they are impressive. They don't sell to the public but I ended up speaking to a technician or something who works closely with the skylights that was more than happy to demo them for me, he even showed me the testing room which is lit up like a disco. From what I understand they assemble them all on site too. When we picked up our ladder from Mitre10 they had the illumes there as well. We're getting one for the bathroom as soon as the ladder project is done… It's the silly season and one thing at a time, or so I'm told Here's the actual company website if you want the contact details http://www.kimprod.com.au/index.html Hope this helps. Re: illume shaftless skylights - Has anyone installed one ye 6Dec 14, 2012 8:29 pm I'm interested in skylights as well, and this looks great. This is probably a stupid question, but how do you install it, and where exactly does the light come from if there is no shaft? But where on earth does the light come from? For the same light solaro day puts out in a room you would have to buy 3 illumes to do the same job. Check the video out on my previous post above. Re: illume shaftless skylights - Has anyone installed one ye 9Dec 14, 2012 10:21 pm The light comes from the solar panel converting sun into electricity then powering the led lights. The light is responsive to the sunlight outside. Re: illume shaftless skylights - Has anyone installed one ye 10Dec 15, 2012 9:48 am Sorry Everyone, Didn't mean to ask then run! Very busy week and now it's xmas shopping.. ugh. Thank you for the feedback, I appreciate it. The salesman I spoke to at Masters had purchased one for himself but not installed it yet so knowing me, I needed to know more. I appreciate the help. Mantis I'm glad you said that your illume only took you about half an hour install. I'm one of 'those' people who tends to pull things apart easily and never get them back together. I try to take on the easiest of DIY projects and from what the skylight guy told me at Masters, the illume system simply connects together with no messing with wires or anything like that. That's suits me! Is it really as easy as that? Did you run into any dramas with it? I'm going back to look at them either today or tomorrow for sure. It's all about where it goes now, and which one of the four sizes will suit. One thing which is handy is on the back of the illume brochure from Masters. It's a plan of a house with various locations pinned on it that they say it works best. It got me thinking where I should try it. The nooks in my place are all pretty dark but out in the open, i'll probably try it somewhere like the toilet or laundry. Somewhere my handy work probably isn't that obvious! It does mention that some models are better suited to the smaller, darker areas of your house. But there seems to be tons of places that suit different illume models so the guide looks l like a useful thing. For those of you who wrote that you're interested in skylights, here's the picture of the illume house map thing so you can see where they can go. Sorry it's only from my phone but you can still read it. illume brochure map: http://i.imgur.com/AMA8c.jpg I'll keep you posted how I go and try and get some good shots when i sort it out. Thanks again! Sorry for the essay! Re: illume shaftless skylights - Has anyone installed one ye 11Dec 15, 2012 10:02 am Sounds to me they're not skylights at all. If the solar panel converts it to electricity, then it's really just an electric light run on solar power. That's not the same as a real skylight where the actual sunlight comes through. It's so easy !!! I guess it won't be long before someone puts up an installation video up, maybe I will try and record my next installation Belive me these act just like a shaft skylight only better it's quite amazing if a cloud passes over or even a low flying bird you can see the change in light and they dim to dark at night ( no switch ) Don't delay just go and buy one, I will be interested how you all go Actually I heard an add Smooth Fm radio that they are also available at Home hardware as well. Re: illume shaftless skylights - Has anyone installed one ye 14Dec 16, 2012 8:05 am Hi aza0 They had 4 sizes of illume at Masters hardware think they started $200 and maybe $390 for the big square one, otherwise check illumeskylights website they may have prices 4 14257 The unit normally clips into a metal plate screwed to the wall, either plate is not flush, or unit not hooked in and could be hanging from the pipes partly, either might… 2 15773 Hi All, we are starting to think of building with Masterpiece Builders in Victoria, has anyone had any feedback or experience with them 0 13567 |
