Disclaimer 1: I'm a 40 year old engineer....a social demographic that does not generally push the boundaries of modern architectural design or anything else "schtylish". Disclaimer 2: There are elements in contemporary design I like....oblong windows, deep upper storey eaves, stackstone, front doors with glass panes, judicious use of timber and stainless steel, water features. Disclaimer 3: My preference is for a more rustic look....not for every one...(as evidenced by my recent purchase which I've included a photo of which you may feel free to bag if it's not your cup of tea.. However, I went for a bike ride today and came across this facade (I know it's looks like a photoshop job but I think that's the camera phone and the color scheme). To my eye it seems like it has too many elements of contemporary house design on the one facade...what do you reckon....tell me why I'm wrong. http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff2/mikeb1968/Image059.jpg http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff2/mikeb1968/Image058.jpg The house we just purchased..... http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff2/mikeb1968/Image1-1.jpg mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: When contemporary goes too far.....? 3Apr 12, 2008 7:26 pm Well, I much prefer your home - delightful. Has a warmth about it, that comes across so vividly. But then I'm in your age bracket as well.........
It is said that a house reflects its owners' personalities - is that true, do you think "to_do_list" ? IMO The 1st house is too stylised - way, way too much of the contemporary & I think that's why it comes across as sterile & lacking in warmth. But that's only my opinion. Re: When contemporary goes too far.....? 4Apr 12, 2008 7:37 pm Southies It is said that a house reflects its owners' personalities - is that true, do you think "to_do_list" ? I agree...but from a design perspective designers can usually explain how elements hang together and I know that in some estates around here they force you into certain facades to vary the streetscape or in the case below to keep it homegeneous...and I'm not bagging contemporary styling...I honestly like most modern design. http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff2/mikeb1968/Image064.jpg mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: When contemporary goes too far.....? 6Apr 12, 2008 8:00 pm Paula Where is that? i'm sorry but that is just too zombie looking (for want of a better word ) I agree...it's a secure estate in Sanctuary Lakes (you can only get in with a security code - to keep riff raff like me out ) my biggest problem would be if you got a bit schlarged at the neighbours how would you remember which house to go to. Incidentally a friend of hours was renting in this particular "secure" estate, the house was two years old and there where termites eating the front door... mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: When contemporary goes too far.....? 7Apr 12, 2008 8:00 pm Parts of that facade are interesting , but what makes the whole thing look odd is that it appears there is no house behind it - that roof pitch is weird. It looks like a pyramid is looming up behind it Built a Clarendon 'Balmain' 2008 Re: When contemporary goes too far.....? 8Apr 12, 2008 8:05 pm Maxie Parts of that facade are interesting That's just it parts of it are interesting.....as much as parts of Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, and Carla Bruni are interesting....but would you put them all on the same human form....! mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: When contemporary goes too far.....? 9Apr 12, 2008 8:05 pm Quote: my biggest problem would be if you got a bit schlarged at the neighbours how would you remember which house to go to. LOL wouldn't want to be mistaken and go into the wrong house in the middle of the night after being out and jumping into the wrong bed. Paula Re: When contemporary goes too far.....? 10Apr 12, 2008 8:12 pm I like the modern boxy designs myself. Which is just as well because we are in the process of building one .
But the first pic posted looks odd ... probably because the portico is too high for the rest of the design and the different elements are competing rather than working together. But love the third pic of all those modern houses ... very very nice IMO Re: When contemporary goes too far.....? 13Apr 12, 2008 8:26 pm DeeElle ... probably because the portico is too high for the rest of the design and the different elements are competing rather than working together. Seems like I'm on the right track...too many things going on...and I didn't mean to imply boxy I like elements of modern design just not when it's laid on thick.... mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: When contemporary goes too far.....? 14Apr 12, 2008 8:27 pm mek I like the flat-roof ones, so I think I have no personality . They would be even better if they were grey . I'm so dull I must be dead. lol ... I'm with you Mek ... I like flat roof grey houses as well. I've been hunting through all the paint shops looking for the right grey colour ... not purple grey or green grey .... just boring ole grey. Love it . And although I like straight lines, I also like developments with different styles rather than the same design repeated over and over . Variety is the spice of life . And some of the houses in the secure estate are nice individually but not when they are repeated 50 times over in an American style gate community with covenants on what you can plant in your front garden...! mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: When contemporary goes too far.....? 17Apr 12, 2008 8:47 pm TDL, your home looks quite attractive... very warm and homely looking.
That place you pictured at the top is (how can I put this politely)....... A representation of a regurgitated dog's dinner! WTF are modern designers doing? Their creative juices are about as imaginative as a house brick! Re: When contemporary goes too far.....? 18Apr 12, 2008 9:06 pm to_do_list To my eye it seems like it has too many elements of contemporary house design on the one facade...what do you reckon....tell me why I'm wrong. I think what is fundamentally wrong with this house design is not its 'contemporary elements' but its use of 'elements' altoghether. Someone just got carried away with their love for geometric shapes! Take away some of the things and I think the house would actually look nice. [sneakersss] Re: When contemporary goes too far.....? 19Apr 12, 2008 9:25 pm Actually I quite like the first house - not saying that I would build that particular facade but I do like it (prob change the portico, thats the bit that seems to be out of place with the rest from my way of thinking).....
Funny what they say about different strokes for different folks - no offence at all meant by this remark but I'm not a big fan of the rustic appearing house, I'd choose the first one over the 2nd if based on the pure appearance of the houses but thats just my taste.......... Fiona Re: When contemporary goes too far.....? 20Apr 12, 2008 9:34 pm Talinsmum I'd choose the first one over the 2nd if based on the pure appearance of the houses but thats just my taste.......... Fiona Ditto. Although I'd change a couple of things. Actually, the shot from the side looks fine. The front on shot makes the portico seem a bit odd.
