Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Dec 01, 2012 11:05 am Is it just me or do others have trouble with builders, handimen etc etc in using the right phone. We tell them and tell them to use the land line - AND only the mobile in an emergency. Well, apparently everythings an emergency. We generally miss the call and then have to ring them back on a mobile. Why don't they note down that you want them to use the land line. AND - why don't they use it ? If a builder etc reads this they might let me know ... I might add this isn't a one-off - its every person I meet in the building industry. Is it something they just do ? Re: Telephones - Mobile and Land Lines ? 2Dec 01, 2012 11:21 am We haven't started our build yet so I can't comment in relation to builders and tradies, but I know I always call people on their mobile. I never use the landline. I suppose it's just become habit. If you don't want to be calling them back from your mobile why don't you wait til you get home so that you can call from the landline? Unless it's actually an emergency of course BUT ... we state quite clearly we want them to ring us that way ! My question is - why don't they listen ? I work from home so its the best way for me. I actually hate friends / people ringing me on mobiles as they often do it when they have their "free" time - ie dinner time; and seem to always ring my mobile - which may be anywhere in the house. I understand habits - but if someone asks you not to - why do they ? Telephones - Mobile and Land Lines ? 6Dec 01, 2012 8:31 pm People have landlines these days? lol I'm assuming if they are calling you, it's for a reason. They may want to quickly clarify something. Furthermore if they call a mobile and you don't answer, you have a number to call back on. Most landlines don't have voicemail or caller ID. You're lucky they are even calling you. I don't see what the issue is. If you don't want them to call your mobile, don't give them your number. I give them a number - it's my landline. Its just as easy to ring it as the "emergency" number. I do have caller ID and answering machine. Most do. I have this crazy idea that as I'm the customer - ie the reason they have a job - if I ask them to call my home phone then they will do this. I have no idea who you are or what you do - but I do hope you treat your customers better than this. Telephones - Mobile and Land Lines ? 8Dec 02, 2012 6:50 am It's just faster to call mobiles and time is money for tradies. I'm an owner builder and work in a professional industry. No disrespect to tradies out there, but they don't work in a professional/corporate type industry so different rules apply to them. In their industry, mobile phones (rightly so) are the preferred point of contact. I do treat my clients very well, but that's expected in my industry. How many times have individual tradies done this after you have told them not to do so. Don't think they are doing it to be rude, they have just use to it. And if this is bothering you, you're going to be in a world of pain if you ever have to owner build. Re: Telephones - Mobile and Land Lines ? 9Dec 02, 2012 7:03 am While I appreciate your answers, I'm still not sure what your answers mean - ie pushing 10 numbers is not quicker than pushing 8 - or why a mobile is easier to ring than a land line - I don't feel working in the corporate or building industries is any different. If you want business you look after your customer and do what he or she asks. I have both phones and do what my customer asks. Many want mobile - many want landline. So I just enter the one they want. Simple. We'll just have to agree to disagree ... Why annoy the person who pays your bills Re: Telephones - Mobile and Land Lines ? 11Dec 03, 2012 7:16 am JB1 I'm just happy to receive any phone call from tradies! lol I'm happy to get them from anyone these days ... You may have a mobile - but you can still ring landlines. I just don't get it ... SM - As frustrating as it might be for you that you don't get why they continue to call your mobile, I think the bottom line is, like it or not, more and more, people simply use and ring mobiles these days - not landlines. It has nothing to do with 'same/less/more' numbers to push - it's just the way it is. Things change, and calling/using/having landlines is becoming increasingly less commonplace - mobiles are what is used these days. I don't even have a landline any more. If you miss their call and need to call them back, just wait until you get home and call them back from your landline if that is your preferred means of communication - assuming it's not an emergency. Or maybe don't answer the mobile and they might soon learn that they can reach you at home instead? They might be asking themselves the same thing - why is it a problem for you to answer the mobile instead of your landline HHCIB Re: Telephones - Mobile and Land Lines ? 15Dec 03, 2012 7:09 pm Thats just the way it is... For example, I would rather a phone call then an SMS any day! I just don't reply to SMS and so now I get the call!! Don't answer your mobile they will soon get the message.. Or better still if it bugs you that much make a message that kindly asks the tradies to call your land line.. Or better still if it bugs you that much make a message that kindly asks the tradies to call your land line.. That's what I reckon.... just don't answer the mobile and they (tradies/anyone for that matter) will hopefully, eventually call the landline. Or even if they don't - don't return the message left on the mobile (again, assuming it's not an emergency) and when they ask if you got their message or why you didn't return the call, you can say that as per your instructions, you had asked them to call the landline so you had only been checking that message-bank. They might eventually learn to contact you on the landline, but I just think you are fighting an uphill battle on this one and maybe not worth the headache it is causing you. Good luck. HHCIB exactly, and hope that you are not paying interest on the 2 week standoff for your tradie wanting an answer on something but because you refuse/ not answering your mobile he is treading water.....whilst your paying interest on funds..... seriously, dont even bother giving a mobile number if you never want to be called on it. i can see both sides and although it may seem as "simple instructions",it is the building industry and some by the looks of things need to suck it up a bit....man you are lucky someone is even ringing you. Re: Telephones - Mobile and Land Lines ? 19Dec 04, 2012 6:33 am OK - thanks guys. I have a mobile - but if someone asks me to ring their landline I do. Maybe I'm the one out here - ie listening to my customer ... I can't see how there could be a 2 week delay because of a phone call. If I say ring me on this Number and I'm there - then I answer. I deliberately don't take the mobile with me at times - I find it rude to interupt meetings, discussions with a ringing mobile. But, that's me I guess. Re: Telephones - Mobile and Land Lines ? 20Dec 04, 2012 8:30 am Saint Mike I deliberately don't take the mobile with me at times - I find it rude to interupt meetings, discussions with a ringing mobile. But, that's me I guess. Well that's a whole different discussion. I don't think anyone is saying that because the use of mobiles is more common and frequent, that it is OK to use them blatantly and without regard for the situation you are in (whether it be a meeting, having dinner, or on the train). You can turn them down/off when it isn't appropriate to take calls. But I didn't think that was the point in question. Of course there is some shocking etiquette out there when it comes to using mobile phones. I carry my mobile with me most of the time - but it is turned down (silent) at work and I don't take/return calls during work unless it is urgent. I would never use it at the dinner table or when in a conversation with people - and certain other times at my discretion. Just because I have it on me doesn't mean I have to use it. You call it bad customer service, but when it comes to the building industry, I'd say it's good service that you are getting the call to begin with - at least they are communication and/or returning calls. That can only be a good thing when it comes to tradies etc. I nearly died yesterday when I actually received a quote when they said I would (mind you, after one call to remind them). You might not like it, but you might have to learn to live with it - or not HHCIB 2 5468 Yeah I don't know why I came to a forum.
