Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Oct 29, 2012 7:16 pm Hi, I was hoping somebody can help me out please. I have a roof which is badly covered in a green matter build up and there is also lots of mortar coming away from the top points. The roof tiles I have are called Whitelaw. I have had a roofing company look at the roof and they say they only install new roofs. They did say that the roof was beyond roof restoration and needed to be replaced. Can these kinds of roof tiles have a roof restoration done to them? My roof is only about 30 years old. If so, are there any good roof restoration companies in Melbourne that I can contact? Thanks in advance, Dave M Re: Roof restoration or roof replacement 2Oct 30, 2012 5:11 am If the tiles are not cracked or fretting ( slowly crumbling as the clay or concrete breaks down ) then it may simply need a good spray with a water blaster to remove any lichen, dirt or other crap and repointing of the hips and ridges. I'd certainly get a few other roof companies to look at it. And if any of the tiles are cracked, just turf them and replace with new ones. Stewie Re: Roof restoration or roof replacement 3Oct 30, 2012 6:12 pm Hi Dave, firstly the matter have on your roofing is called Lichen. The mortar / cement you have falling out is deteriorating away from the ‘ridge capping’. Your valley’s and gables are probably in the same condition if you have some of them on your roof. Unfortunately Dave, different companies will tell you stories about what you really require in order to suit themselves and the kind the service they offer. Companies in the new roofing game will only push new roofs. These companies also tend to (not all of them though) talk ill of roof restorations, saying that roof restorations are not worth doing. Well the above statement could not be further from the truth. Especially taking into account your roof tiles. They are a good product (Whitelaw) and only 30 years old. They are a prime candidate for a roof restoration. I think you should have a reputable roof restoration company inspect your roof. One who replaces roofs and also restores them. Then you will get an unbiased opinion of how to proceed. Offcourse our tradesmen are fully qualified in roof restorations and also roof replacements / new roof installs. So we pride ourselves on offering the correct advice on which option to choose. If you would like to give our team a buzz, we always available to answer any questions you may have. My advice is to make sure you have at least one reputable roof restoration company view your roof to make sure it can be restored. Don’t get pushed into something more expensive that may not need to done. Good luck with your decision.
