Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Oct 29, 2012 12:24 am Hi there, This forum seems to provide very useful ideas and suggestions on home improvement. It's a starting point for me since I'm a newbie with a huge mortgage to pay I'm in the process of updating the dated kitchen and bathroom. I don't like the popcorn ceiling effect and want to smooth it out. It's been a floating graveyard for insects! The unit is mostly concrete and was built in the late 70s so I don't know if there is asbestos. A little bit of Googling seem to suggest there might be so DIY seems to be out of the question. So what's the most cost-effective way to smooth it out? I've read that we can render, plaster, sheet, or paint over with some thick filler paint. What's the difference between rendering, plastering, and sheeting the ceiling? Would I still need to paint over any of these methods? Any guidance is much appreciated!!! Re: Smoothing out popcorn ceiling 2Oct 29, 2012 8:03 am The "popcorn" ceiling you are referring to is probably Vemiculite, which was sprayed on. It does not contain asbestos. You can try and scrape it off then patch and paint it ( difficult if it has adhered well ). This would probably be the cheapest way. Strip it off the best you can and render ( sand & cement plaster ) the ceiling and paint it. Or scrape the worst off then batten the ceiling and sheet it with gyprock. If your demolition contractor has not removed Asbestos and it was found… 12 28809 Thanks for the informative response! I'll feed that back to the site supervisor. 2 4126 |
