Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 27, 2012 1:28 pm Hi everyone, another newbie here. We have never owned or built a house before and are in the beginning stages of working out what we plan to do next year when we are ready to go. We want to accommodate my parents as well as us and our future kids, hence the granny flat option. We would be looking to buy/build in the Logan or Ipswich area on a 3 acre block (not purchased yet or anything, just the ideal size we want). We have thought about building a big garage/shed that we (partner and I) can live in while our main house gets built (by the looks owner builder is no better than paying someone?) and then once complete, finish off the garage/shed to a suitable standard for parents. Does anyone know what sort of regulations there would be in regards to doing this? And would the $14k gov grant still apply? The other option is to buy a house and then build a granny flat/shed to convert. Has anyone got any experience with any of the above that can help us find more information/tips etc. If you have any info that I may have forgotten that you think I will need, please post that also Re: After info on building & granny flats QLD 2Sep 27, 2012 10:31 pm First up, I'd go and see your local council for info on the granny flat issue. Most councils have different approaches and usually somewhere on their websites where you can download a guide. Stewie Due to work, getting to the council is going to be mission impossible for at least the next few months, hence trying to get hold of info prior to getting in there. I havent been able to find anything on council websites, they are hopeless I would suggest you simply go and talk to council about your proposal, most councils are getting onboard with ancillary dwellings.
