Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 01, 2008 12:24 am Looking at getting some outdoor blinds for may pergola. I have had 1 quote already and the guy said I could have it in either pvc or a fancy shade cloth material for the same price.
I would have thought that the shade cloth would be cheaper than pvc. He reccomended for perth that the shade cloth is more usable more often than the pvc even though it only blocks (according to him) 85% of normal rain as it will breathe when its warm to prevent heat buildup. Is this crap/sales pitch???? Re: Outdoor Blinds 2Apr 01, 2008 5:27 am Sounds like a spin job to me.
I had PVC blinds at the cafe and they never leaked. Which way are they facing, what do you need them for? to stop the western sun, or stop the wind to enjoy winters northern sun? That should be the decider. Get another quote. Steve Re: Outdoor Blinds 3Apr 01, 2008 7:13 am When the sun beats down and no breeze can get in it does get warm inside the area closed off with blinds. When this happens I simply open one or two of them to let the breeze through... (duh).
The reason I got the blinds was to stop the wind and rain - completely - which they do. We got clear PVC blinds so they wouldn't block any light and we could still see the view through them. If that means we have to roll the odd blind up when we actually want a breeze, so be it (this functionality is built in to them by default, yeah? ). Re: Outdoor Blinds 4Apr 01, 2008 11:54 am My patio faces east so it only gets the morning sun. My main concern is to block wind, rain is not really a problem as its infrequent here.
The pvc is guaranteed to block all wind and rain. The shade cloth is guaranteed to block all wind and 85% rain. This all according to the rep. The shade cloth has the added benefit of being longer lasting and requires less maintenance, it can also be deployed during hot weather as it will breathe and let out hot air (be a handy insect screen too). This is all according to the sails rep. The thing that I find puzzling is that they are the same price, I really would have expected the shade cloth to cost less than pvc. The reps eagerness to install shade cloth makes me think they have a fatter profit margin on it.
