Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 21, 2012 9:52 pm We have a slope so will split the ground floor slab once or twice from 0.8m to 1.2m down.. However, depending on whether the front of the house is 2.4m or 2.6m, the ceilings at the back will be 3.2m to 3.8m. We might put extra windows above the doors at the back but wondering if anyone thinks this ceiling height is too high and will look odd? Re: Ceiling height - 3.8m too high 2Sep 21, 2012 11:22 pm It will depend on your design, however it will certainly look different from the rest of your home and if you are in a cold area it will take an awful lot of energy (dollars) to heat this volume Arfur Re: Ceiling height - 3.8m too high 4Sep 22, 2012 7:27 am JB1 What directions would the windows be facing? Think about double glazing. I would love 3.8m ceilings! It will be back of the house, which faces North West (am in Sydney) Most of the back will be a covered alfresco which will provide shading, however the side without the Alfresco would require some kind of shading device above the windows but not sure how effective this will be in summer. However, we do have plenty of trees to west of North West along the boundary which will also provide some shade. We will also put blinds inside which can be pulled down in summer as well. Hopefully this will help with the hot summer days (although to be honest we use heating in winter much much more than we use aircon in summer (usually only for 5 days or so in summer). So that is one issue but was also thinking about aesthetics - we have 2.8m ceilings in the current house which will be knocked down and so 1m on top of that does seem high Ceiling height - 3.8m too high 5Sep 22, 2012 7:48 am Will it look odd? I doubt. Will it have WOW factor? Hell yes! Ceiling height - 3.8m too high 6Sep 22, 2012 9:06 am The only negative will be the western sun in summer. It will be beautiful and bright in winter. Go do it for sure! The only thing I can suggest is double glazing and some type of automated ceiling/window ventilation for summer. Heat will rise and stay there, some airflow will reduce the heat in the evenings. Re: Ceiling height - 3.8m too high 8Sep 22, 2012 7:28 pm I think "Carlisle" by Clarendon (if it's still displayed - might need to check the design online and call them to ask as they were doing some changes). But I think it's at the front part (hi-ce). It's not exactly what you are asking, but similar. It has a great feel!!! Think of it as cathedral celings. Most people consider them classy?? and desirable. I am more like you, concerned about heating I wouldn't worry too much about summer since you can always protect those windows ... Re: Ceiling height - 3.8m too high 9Sep 22, 2012 11:17 pm I have 2.7 metre high ceilings generally, but it rises to 3.6 metres in in the living area and continues to two other rooms. There are awnings windows on the top 600 mm. It's very nice and I'm glad I did it. The only problem I have is changing light bulbs.
