Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 14, 2012 10:11 am I have just had my solid timber floor which is in blackbutt layed. I am after a clear natural finish, and hoping someone could give me some advise as to the name of some finishes, and what you would recommend. Thanks for your help. Adrian Re: Blackbutt Solid Timber Flooring - What finish? 2Sep 16, 2012 1:07 pm Tung Oil. Lets the timber breathe , soaks into it rather than a layer on top like poly and is easily recoated to bring it back to life unlike poly which has to usually have the whole floor re-sanded then coated. You should ask this question in the flooring section rather than here as you will get a lot more replies. Stewie Re: Blackbutt Solid Timber Flooring - What finish? 3Sep 18, 2012 6:36 pm Would tung oil require regular re-application though? I would have thought so. Generally I think the darker timber looks better in a gloss... while lighter (like Blackbutt) definitely looks better with a poly satin or low sheen in my opinion. Re: Blackbutt Solid Timber Flooring - What finish? 4Sep 18, 2012 7:38 pm Not really or should I say that with a caveat. After sanding the floor the guy I use gives it three coats of tung oil and that's it. He then recommends to the clients to get a certain acrylic sealer ( name escapes me for the moment ) . After 6 months , a year or when the floor starts to look " tired " for lack of a better word just vacuum the floor and apply this sealer with either a mop or roller which will bring the floor back to looking as good as new. I have several friends ( and more than a few clients ) who have had poly on their timber floors of their old houses and then tung oil on their new homes and they all swear they would never go back to polyurethane coated timber floors. I'm pretty sure the Tung oil comes in either gloss or low sheen as well. Stewie Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 15909 If this is a custom build then I would expect the builder to set out the door frame closer to the wall to avoid the gap between architrave and the wall and or specify… 9 8306 Hi, did you get any money from insurance? if you did, does it match what you've already paid the builders? 3 9565 |
