Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 10, 2012 9:16 pm Hi I am doing up a bathroom. The bulider drew up the plan, but when the shower went in he realised that it would not fit. I now have a shower that is 68cm x97 cm and that is without tiles! What can I do the floor tiles are down, he is telling me that the shower is big enough but Im not conviced. what can I do? Re: Problems with shower size and builder 3Sep 10, 2012 9:46 pm If the shower was drawn a certain size, it should be built to that size. 68cm is tiny. there were no dementions on the floor plan. the builder made me sign that that was the floor plan that i wanted and that I would pay the amount outstanding. As for the size after tiles the builder has not said anything. To explain a little more about this situation. the bathroom had some damage due to a house fire. The insurance company arranged for a bulider. As i did not want a patch up job, I decided to change all the plumbing at my expense $2,200, and changed the lay out of the room, and purchased new accessories etc. I did complain to the building supervisor, who just did not get back to me. But I did hear that he did say that the room was not of his liking. The problem is the following I am working with a builder that is working with an experienced insuerbuild, that has a poor reputation with the industry. If I complain my rent losses will be greater than finishing the job and re- pumbing. and then who can I complain to? it is not the insurance company's issue if I authorised the extra work, and agreed tp change the layout. When I measured the shower space i assumed that the builder could put a shower in all the way to the door jam making the space at least 90x100cm. There was never any coversation about the shower not fitting. The orginal shower was 80x130cm but was shortened due to accomodation of the bathtub nd the builder not wanting to re sheet the wall and now wanting to tile straight onto the render. it is a mess but I am dealing with a builder thast I did not feel comfortable with but the insurance company insisted that I use. I think the builder knows that he stuffed up but feel that Im a walk over and i did sign the floor plan. Re: Problems with shower size and builder 6Sep 10, 2012 10:53 pm Then what is the scale of the plan, or is it not drawn to scale? What is around the shower, walls, screen, vanity, what? I'm trying to get my mind around where exactly the shower is and how nobody noticed sooner that the space was not shower-sized. (Yeah 68cm is tiny.) Re: Problems with shower size and builder 9Sep 17, 2012 3:57 am so you have signed a blank piece of paper pretty much and handed them money prior to completion, now you have not specified what size it had to be nor is it noted anywhere, dug yourself a bit of a hole, just hope for your sake the builder is nice and re does yoru bathroom. Re: Problems with shower size and builder 10Sep 17, 2012 4:55 pm m69 is there a legal shower size? I don't know but what I do know is even when builders break the rules trying to make them go back and do it right can be a long horrible process, just warning you so you don't think if you find a "legal size" somewhere that's the end of it. Have you talked to Fair Trading about it, sometimes they're just as useless but it's worth a go? Re: Problems with shower size and builder 11Sep 17, 2012 11:12 pm This one is a hard one, I have not paid him for the pumbing yet. it is hard as he was hired as part of the insurance repair, and I was in a bind. the builder has taken 17months to rewire home, repair floor boards in one bedroom, resheet walls and do up one bedroom!!!!!! totally insane..........i really needed him to finish, so i signed to move the job on. I did have a chat to fair trading and all you can do is lodge it and they will look at every case individually. But surely a builder with 20 years experience should have some idea what to do.especially one that is hired by an insurance company, and has a supervisor checking his work Re: Problems with shower size and builder 12Sep 20, 2012 5:46 pm m69 . . . surely a builder with 20 years experience should have some idea what to do.especially one that is hired by an insurance company, and has a supervisor checking his work Sounds like perhaps he's found himself an easy ride in the twilight years of his career. He doesn't have to advertise, he doesn't have to worry about word of mouth, the insurance company sends work his way and he does it, more or less. Have you spoken to the insurance company? Who is the supervisor and at what stages has he inspected? Re: Problems with shower size and builder 13Sep 20, 2012 8:38 pm m69 he is telling me that the shower is big enough but Im not conviced. Make sure it is 78 and it doesn't get whittled down with various layers. To make this happen I put in the minimum size ensuite to make it workable. I spent a lot of time juggling the size of the vanity, toilet space and shower space to make it optimal. My decision was to make the shower space 76 cm wide. Not luxurious, but I believe this is the minimum size that will work. I stood in the shower space this morning and have to say that although it's a touch tight, it works. The other dimension is the full width of the ensuite which is about 1450 mm, so part of the concept is that you can stand side on when you need the elbow room such as washing your hair. So I think 78 cm will work, but make sure that this is the finished dimension after tiling, allowing for the glass, etc. You can't afford to loose 15 mm per side! I hope this helps. Having said all this, I bet that with a little thought you can have your door jam and 90 cm shower. Any chance of posting the floor plan for the bathroom? I hope this is not the main shower for the house.
