However, if you don’t get the necessary information and support you need, then it will be a little tough. We have our own builders at the self storage since the requirements vary, but there are some aspects that we had to engage a contractor. Thus, know what you need and the extent of the job. Then, you can just see which activities that you will need to have a contractor and which ones you can do. What seems to be the officer's problem? Re: project builder vs owner builder ? 9Nov 27, 2014 10:35 pm After being screwed over by a builder and having to demolish the slab he was responsible for we decided to go owner builder and also for financial reasons. We broke ground on the 16th of September as OB's and are locked up with gyprockers finishing this week and tiler starting next week....hopefully moved in by Xmas all continuing as is. It doesn't have to take longer or cost more! We have saved around $150k and have all mid to high end inclusions. We had no experience but had the part time help of friends who are trustworthy builders and tradies and also Matt from Greenify Consulting who was instrumental in advising when to do what and why and giving us an idea on costs to expect. See my post in the owner builder forum. You do need to take holidays and put in the time to micro manage people and troubleshoot problems as they occur. Seek quotes for everything and book everyone in. Communication is the key here! Keep a good handle on you costs and apply for a Bunnings account as soon as you get issued you OB license. Save where you can for example keep your site clean to save yourself money. Every day sort rubbish i to recycle and rubbish put it in your otto bins weekly. Little things like Keeping an esky stocked with ice and water and soft drinks in this 35-40 weather and keep the loo clean. People work well when they know you appreciate them and make the environment a nice one to be in. Go for it I say! It is a very enjoyable and rewarding experience!
