Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Mar 24, 2008 3:52 pm Just wondering which HWS people are using,
ie; gas versus electric and rinnai vs rheem vs bosch etc someone told me that it was much of a muchness in terms of brand names and just to go for whatever was on special. Any thoughts? Re: Hot Water Service 2Mar 24, 2008 4:02 pm We went for whatever the builder provided which happens to be Rheem Integrity EXT 875 Preset 50 (just copied that from my contract )
I know it is instant gas heater. My parents have an instant gas heater and find it very good, also saves money as you only heat the water as you need it rather than traditional ones which heat the tank up for the day. Had to replace our HWS in present house a few months ago (previous one lasted over 20 years - pretty good, hey) - but our present house is not on mains gas so had to go electric again. Re: Hot Water Service 3Mar 24, 2008 4:49 pm Also accepted standard inclusion - in our case, Rinnai Infinity 26 litre instantaneous gas HWS. Re: Hot Water Service 4Mar 24, 2008 5:12 pm Same with Hely, we went for whatever the builder provided as standard.
As per our contract, it's the "Chromagen 201VOBP11T26 200 litre continuous flow solar hot water service combined in one unit with (1No) CR110BOP solar collector as standard" ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: Hot Water Service 5Mar 24, 2008 9:01 pm I would definitely go for instantenous gas ...
- heat only as little/much as you require - gas is cheaper than electricity - no need for big tank in the backyard Suggest you go for a mains power ignition model (without pilot light). Chris Re: Hot Water Service 6Mar 25, 2008 10:44 am I too have gone with the builder's standard, which is Rheem 160 litre Loline gas boosted solar HWS including one roof collector and ground mounted tank.

Re: Hot Water Service 7Mar 25, 2008 11:25 am radds Was told several years ago, that the tariff for instantaneous systems is a lot higher that storage systems ie bills are higher. Any comments on this ? Totally disagree. In our last home we upgraded from a gas storage system to a instaneous gas system and our gas bills instantly dropped by 50%. Us too but so did our hot water pressure. I was worried about the pressure from the instantaneous h/water systems because if it pushes water thru too fast it doesnt heat up enough. Oh and the temperature is limited to 50degC or something like that. If you like your hot water really hot a heaps of pressure then go with a storage system. We have an Infinity 32 Re: Hot Water Service 11Mar 25, 2008 6:16 pm Had a Rinnai Infinity 26 for just over 3 years now and have never regretted it for one day! Re: Hot Water Service 12Mar 25, 2008 8:00 pm Mayland,
Put in a solar system. You're not locked into any "builders package" So put in something that will save you money long term. Gas boosted solar. And there are good rebates available too. Steve Re: Hot Water Service 13Mar 25, 2008 8:18 pm Yak_Chat Gas boosted solar. Is gas boosted solar cheaper than the Rinnai instant-on system? Particularly if coupled with the Smartstart system that recycles the cold water? I have no idea which one would be better long-term, both cost-wise and environmentally. I don't actually mind paying a little more if its more environmentally friendly. Re: Hot Water Service 14Mar 25, 2008 8:40 pm From the products I've been reviewing a gas boosted solar is basically a solar system with an instantaneous gas heater to the taps.
So if the water is not hot enough comming from the solar system, the gas heater warms it, then feeds it to the taps. If it's hot enough, then no gas used and the hot water is supplied direct from the solar tank. When you go to do it - ask the tough questions. I have the builder special brand of the R as per above gas heater - it's not advertised, does the same as the others, but is priced to suit the project homes. Coupled with a solar system - when I can get a rebate - it's what I'm going for long term. Steve PS my plumber mentioned that the best brand was the rinnai as he had seen a few issues over the years with the B brands. YAY Also a little tip: DOnt worry too much about water pressure. When building a new house now most taps are limited to between 7-9 litres per minutes anyway.
