Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 31, 2012 12:18 pm Ok so we have purchased a sloping block of land in Eltham North. Planning to build a custom built home on it for ourselves for at least the next 15 years. We have our hearts set on a steel framed home of about 35sq two stories on top of a garage. We have been looking for a builder and although we have found a builder we love. They are not experienced with Steel Frame. They are also a little more expensive than we had hoped. Does anyone out there know of a steel framed builder that wants to take on a job in Eltham North? Re: Custom Home in Eltham North 2Aug 04, 2012 11:15 pm I would be happy to have a look. Re: Custom Home in Eltham North 3Aug 10, 2012 11:10 pm Hi MattC123, Thanks for being the only person to respond to me. We dont actuall have a steel frame yet or even an actual plan as yet. All we have are our ideas and the desire to build a steel framed home. We like the idea of a steel frame because it is a change to the building industry and one that we like. It is more termite resistant than wood and can be measured and built to the millimetre. It can be errected in half the time as wood with more accuracy. Many builders are adverse to it at the moment but I bet if we moved forward 10 years, many builders will be building with it. We believe it could be the "Apple" of the building industry and thats a wave we want to ride. A vision...a dream....or the future??? Who knows?? All we need is the builder that is willing to take that chance with us. Re: Custom Home in Eltham North 4Aug 11, 2012 10:51 am Hello sam10. Just so you don't feel lonely! Do you have any sketches of your ideas for a plan? Hey MattC123. How would you go about building a steel-framed house? With a timber frame, you can send the plans off to a frame company and they'll calculate the stud spacings and other technical stuff and voila. . . deliver your finished frame to site. Is there a similar service available for steel-framed houses, or would you have to design it yourself? There's a company called Spantech in NSW that design and build steel bearer and joist flooring that may be of interest.
