Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 22, 2012 9:00 pm Hi there, we recently got a new timber paling fence at our house. Our neighbours wouldnt agree to get the higher height of 1.9 metres (even though we said we would pay the difference) so we are stuck with a 1.6 metre fence. We want to put a fence extension on the top as we are all very tall so we can see straight over the fence when we walk outside. The council said we have to get the neighbours permission if we attach anything to the fence as we both own the fence. Is there any way around this? I was under the impression & everyone else has told us that we dont have to get their permission as long as whatever is attached to the fence is attached to your side? Does anyone know if this is true? The neighbours wont agree to any extra height as they think it will "block out their sun" which is ridiculous as its only 30 cm and on the back of their house that they never use. Is there any way we could find fence extensions that dont clip to the top of the fence and that we could attach from our side only?? The posts of the fence are on our side too & we would only be adding an extra 30cm to the top of the fence bringing it to 1.9 metres in total which is under the 2 metres maximum height that most councils state. Any help or advice would be appreciated Re: Fence Extensions 2Jul 22, 2012 9:25 pm As the fence is a "shared" property you need permission to alter it in any way. A way around this is to place posts, probably steel or similar into a concrete footing, they do not have be huge, and mount your extension onto that. As long as it is not attached to the fence that should be fine. You should just be aware that the weight of your extension will effect the size of your posts. A lighter weight extension similar to a trellis would be the way to go so that perhaps some sort of plant or similar may be trained or grown through the extension. Would keep the weight down and depending on planting some colour. Become a super nosey neighbor, they'll soon get sick of ya mug and give in to your request. 2 Re: Fence Extensions 4Jul 23, 2012 8:36 pm Love Nath's suggestion! Could you plant a fast growing hedge on that fence line? If just one neighbour wants that, then the other neighbour cannot veto it, but they have the right to refuse to pay for the extra height above what is there now, or of ntohing is there, what is considered standard height in the area. Any ideas on a sound proof modular fence. Like… 0 7472 1 4581 |
