There is a property I am considering purchasing but when I inspected the roof space the gang nails on the roof trusses were showing signs of rust, not bad, but nonetheless present. The property is probably 40 or 50 years old. Is there any reason to be alarmed by this finding?

Not after 40-50Yrs, it's would probably be just surface rust from condensation within the roof cavity.
But if you are serious about buying a property point it out to the pre pruchase building inspector and let them know of your concerns.
