Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 20, 2012 4:35 pm Hi, Not sure whether this is the right forum as there doesn't seem to be a plumbing electrical one. Anyway, I want to hang a couple of things and I am not sure where the water pipes are and just wondering if anyone can assist in how to locate them. I know there is a particular gadget you can buy from Bunnings etc called a stud finder or something. But as I have a brick wall I am not sure whether this would work. Also I do not want to spend a fortune as it will only be used a couple of times, but may come in handy for the new build. Any suggestions, brands etc that I can buy? It would also be handy if this was able to locate electrical too. Thanks in advance.. A standard metric house brick measures 230mm long x 1100mm tall x 76mm wide. This means you'll have to drill 76mm+ before you hit the other side. I doubt (although it may happen for some unknown reason) that anyone would feed a water pipe trough a single brick wall. If so you have no way of finding it IMO. However, if you're talking about hanging shelves, you can use Dynabolts or a chemical anchor that does not require you to drill through the brick and out the other side. If its just for pictures then you can use those expanding plastic sleeve type plugs that you drill into the mortar and secure with an oversize screw. Stud finders are designed to find timber studs hard up against plasterboard sheeting and even foil insulation can interrupt expensive ones. I know, because mines not cheap and it doesn't work on my garage wall, garage side where the foil wrap is. You can get yourself a good Stanley stud finder from Bunnings for $15. Handy to have and pretty cheap too. Is it in a bathroom? Or just a random wall in the house? If it's into plaster over brick, this is a bit of stuffing around. Mark where you want to put the fixing, then just below and too one side cut a hole in the plaster. Check there are no pipes then patch the small holes and put your fixings where you want them to go. Re: PLUMBERS.....HELP HOW TO LOCATE WATER PIPES IN BRICK WAL 6Jul 23, 2012 11:21 pm Oneness. Where are the holes you are going to put in and what sort of fixings are you wanting to use? If they are in a bedroom or living area then you will be fine, just don't drill directly above a power point as the cable is chased straight up the wall from power points. Even if the wall backs onto a bathroom you would need to have drilled almost through the wall before you'd hit a pipe If you are drilling in a wet area then the pipes are usually run in fairly standard positions however with the advent of PEX pipes the routing of pipes can be a little more random than it used to be with copper. Any chance you can put a picture up and I'll let you know if you'd need to be concerned. Just realised that it is a picture you want to hang. Just go to Bunnings and get some 5mmx25mm mushroom head Ramset nylon anchors and some Ramset wall hooks. That's the simplest way to hang a picture. Just concerned that this one is in the bathroom above the taps/spout and dont want to drill and hit a water pipe as the white set plaster and green render are not very thick... Beginning to just give up on the idea and use the wall stickers for art instead! This should be able to pinpoint the general area. Re: PLUMBERS.....HELP HOW TO LOCATE WATER PIPES IN BRICK WAL 9Jul 24, 2012 9:33 am If it's above your basin then you should be fine. Plumbers typically run all the pipes together and not in areas that are likely to have the need for holes to be drilled. They avoid putting pipes where mirrors and shower screens will be installed. Usually the pipes come down into the bathroom in the shower recess area and then after going to the shower taps, run horizontally to the bath and basin. If you are really concerned just get up in the roof and see if there are any plumbing pipes running into the wall directly above where you want to drill. Pipes run either vertically or horizontally they dont just run them in random directions. If there is no pipe showing in the roof area where you want to drill then you will be fine. Can you post a picture indicating where the hole is to go. I'll tell you straight away if you need to be concerned. I had this problem a few years ago when fixing grab rails for the oldies and they had to be near the taps for obvious reasons. Never hit a pipe (being a tradie I had an idea where the pipework ran) although the oxy set was always in the van just in case. LOL Why you want to hang a picture in a wet area escapes me as I think steam would eventually ruin it, however if its a heavier mirror I would NOT use stick on hooks as they occasionally let go Arfur Re: PLUMBERS.....HELP HOW TO LOCATE WATER PIPES IN BRICK WAL 11Jul 24, 2012 12:05 pm Lourance If you are really concerned just get up in the roof and see if there are any plumbing pipes running into the wall directly above where you want to drill. I think getting up in the roof is a good idea... It is above the end of the bath which is located next to a window...I had thought perhaps the pipes would come in horizontally from the cavity..If they are vertical then I am screwed as the hook would be smack in in the middle. chippy Why you want to hang a picture in a wet area escapes me as I think steam would eventually ruin it, however if its a heavier mirror I would NOT use stick on hooks as they occasionally let go I know what you mean but this is a bathroom that only ever gets used when I feel like having a bath (it is the spare bathroom)..Just wanted to brighten it up before selling...I would never use sticky hooks either...would not take the risk... I will be sure to take photos of all pipework/cables etc in the new build for future reference Thanks everyone for all your input too!!
