Found one place but interested in seeing some other options. Mind you, we never had a fish tank, so we thought the idea would be nice... Re: Fish Tank in Perth 2Jul 16, 2012 11:26 am hi, not sure about tanks over there... but have you thought of what type of aquarium you are thinking of? as a marine / saltwater tank will cost you $$$ and generally a huge amount of time and money to upkeep. Re: Fish Tank in Perth 3Jul 16, 2012 11:41 am Although I am from Perth I live in Singapore and keep tropical fish. I think all the tanks that are installed as in-wall separators need a lot of upkeep. My tank in Singapore is a 600L tank with 80L sump filter and it is still quite a bit of work. I have a big water filter to remove chlorine but if you are using tap water you will need to condition the water. There is an aquarirum shop at the end of Grand Prominade and Railway Parade in Melthem (near Maylands) its called aquarium city. I would not try a salt water tank as a beginner unless you are paying someone to maintain. Tropicals are also quite expensive in Perth. If you are serious, PM me and I can give you a cost comparison as the price diff will pay for a holiday in Singapore. My set up in Singapore is about AUD1,000 and in Australia it would be double if not triple that I think. Although it is a lot of effort it can be quite rewarding (and frustrating) sometimes. Cheers Mark Re: Fish Tank in Perth 5Jul 16, 2012 12:07 pm I kept 11 tropical tanks in my nuttiest moments. I'm now down to one 6ft tank and two nano tanks. If you are seriously considering investing in an in-wall tank, and it's your first time keeping tropical fish, I highly recommend aquariumlife.com.au. It's an Aussie fishkeeping forum, with quite a strong WA presence. They will be able to give you all the advice you need, including recommendations for tank builders - but be warned. It's a steep learning curve early on! I wasn't thinking about getting salt water tank, I was thinking about normal "tap/river" water tank and fish to go with it. I honestly don't know anything about the fish i must admit, just wanted something "nice" to look at... I guess I'm just like one girl that came to HiFi store (true story) and said that she wanted to get silver HiFi system regardless how much it cost or what functions it has simply because it was going well with her decore. You can setup a nice tropical tank within budget and make it low maintenance. There's so many ways of doing it. You should be able to source cheap parts from forums as well. More than happy to assist. Re: Fish Tank in Perth 9Jul 24, 2012 2:14 pm I had a salt water tank to much time to look after it. Go tropical, Ebay sometime has some good bargains.. Re: Fish Tank in Perth 11Jul 24, 2012 8:42 pm You don't. Sand is horrible to keep clean. You can only hold the vacuum a couple of centimetres above the surface - just enough to suck up the surface debris but little to none of the sand. Gravel/aquarium soils are much easier. Sand in marine tanks needs to be turned over to prevent anaerobic pockets releasing poisonous nitrogen gasses. There are ways to keep Deep Sand Beds, but they are a whole other lesson. Easiest to keep them under a couple of inches deep and just turn over frequently. I had white sand and it's very difficult to keep clean. I would go for a dark gravel as it doesn't look too dirty and easy to suck up the debris with a vacuum. Re: Fish Tank in Perth 13Jul 25, 2012 6:19 pm The very same. Another thing you can do that I think makes a tank visually stimulating is to have a planted tank. And use aquarium soil instead of sand or gravel Also helps keep your tank a little healthier by removing some of the fish byproducts naturally with the plants absorbing them. But it depends on what look your after. I personally love a plated tank and spent more time organizing the plants than the fish lol Now I spend hours watching the whole tank very therapeutic. And I love my little shrimpies And always get the best filter you can afford.
