Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 02, 2012 10:51 pm I know there are a couple of threads with similar questions raised but none answered with any suggestions of how to or what to use So i am asking for peoples thoughts on how to create a finish from ground coverage to house where the house slab has about 200mm height before first row of bricks. i have thought of things like a row of pavers set against the house or a raised garden bed ( however dont like this one due to increase risk of termites). i dont really want to have to bring in fill to raise ground level but want to fix the look of the exposed slab somehow suggestions????? pics where possible please will help MDJ Homes - Bordeaux 14 + now with improvements Re: dressing up sides of house slab 2Jul 03, 2012 7:41 am Is this a deepened edge slab? Or is it all around the house? How come there si so much (20 cm) of the slab exposed?? How big is the area you need to cover (or do you not care about the cost)? Anyway, can you post some pics so we can get a better idea of your colours and materials? My first thought (without having a look) is to "tile" it with those pretend "mosaic" stones ... can't remember what are they called !! They are quite thin (almost like tiles) and these days you could probably find them in not-so-rock-face designs ... But of course it all depends on your colours and materials, both on the house and in nearby landscaping ... My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: dressing up sides of house slab 3Jul 03, 2012 8:02 am I thought builders were required to backfill up to the brickline with a sloping grade away from the house as a requirement by the building standards?? I may be wrong but that's what my builder has done, I thought it was pretty much a standard these days. dressing up sides of house slab 4Jul 03, 2012 11:54 am Thanks for the replies. I will try to take some pics next time I'm there if not will have to be once we move in. It is a flat block and the slab is on top of the ground. Our last build was similar at the rear as we were on a sloping block. Think maybe just a row of pavers held in place with some concrete might be the easiest. That way will look like a border. Just not sure how it will look MDJ Homes - Bordeaux 14 + now with improvements Re: dressing up sides of house slab 5Jul 03, 2012 8:34 pm I am accredited timber pest inspector and can tell you that one of the most effective non chemical termite management features is exposed slab (75mm min) around home serving as the inspection zone. It won't stop termites but will force them to build exposed mud tunnel that can be easily spotted for treatment. I will never know why everyone does not do it, or why it's not in regulations, perhaps because we are hell bent of spraying chemicals when we need it and when we don't and poisoning our environment. Instead builders spray perimeter of house(spray and forget), have you stopped to think what it may do to your pets and your kids.
