Our build's about to go to site so all selections and specifications are already signed and sealed. My questions are these: 1) is there any reason or advantage in getting the builder to do this? (preference is not to) and 2) if not the builder, who would we go to for quotes? (kitchen cabinet makers? carpenters? home entertainment specialists?) What I'm thinking is something a bit like Dani & Dan did on The Block [such an addict! I can't believe it's almost over] a feature wall with recess for TV, shelves that wrap around and floor cupboards: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I mocked it up in sketch-up to see how it would look in our Theatre and I think it's the perfect way to balance out the under-stair cupboard door. The only issues I can see with doing this after the build is that there will be power points on the original wall (close to the floor and behind the telly). Would they need to move these, or would you leave a gap in the false feature wall to get to floor the ones in the cupboard? I think they would be a great place to start. I think it will look smashing when its completed! We had a custom-built unit in our family room at our old place which was done by the same company who supplied and installed our kitchen. To keep costs down, I had them build it to my specifications, but did all the painting myself. Ours was just constructed out of MDF, which once painted, came up a treat. I had the doors and drawer fronts made with the same profile as our kitchen cupboards and a bulkhead to the ceiling added. Choice of finish will impact on price too - you can have just about anything from paint to laminates to natural timber... Basically. If the shelves are fixed then they will be screwed in just the same as the rest of the carcass.
