Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Mar 09, 2008 11:26 am We all see things in display houses and friends' newly-built homes that make us shudder and secretly think, I'd never have that in my house!
For me, it's a wine rack IN the kitchen. Varying reasons why it is NOT for me. There are other things I would never have / do that others may think are an integral part of their home, but I can't think of any others right this minute. What is it for you? What gets your goat when you walk through homes? What makes you think, "Ugh!"? Fiona Re: I can't believe they'd have one! 2Mar 09, 2008 11:41 am A study right next to the front door WITH NO DOOR!
I don't know about others but I am messy, and I don't see that it's particularly practical to have such a room on display as soon as you walk in the front door. Ray. Second Time 'Round Re: I can't believe they'd have one! 3Mar 09, 2008 11:44 am Funny you should mention that Ray Luckily we don't really make a huge mess as both DH's and my jobs are outside the home, so it would only really be for recreational internet use and should only have a computer, desk, chair and filing cabinet - hoping it won't be too messy Re: I can't believe they'd have one! 4Mar 09, 2008 11:50 am Ohhhhh - yes! Actually, that's what our floorplan shows! I've just thought of another "ick" - water features. Many display homes have HUGE water features and to me they're a complete waste of a depleting resource. Hmm.....sorry to those who have water features and love 'em. Fiona Re: I can't believe they'd have one! 5Mar 09, 2008 12:19 pm Some of mine
Breakfast bars &/or bar stools at the kitchen bench - I just can't do it!, the kitchen is for cooking, the dining table for eating Master bedrooms with lounges in it - I just don't get it.... Ensuite bathrooms where the toilet is visable (or the person using the toilet would be visable) from the master bedroom cause there is no door or no thought put into the arrangement of the bathroom Fiona Re: I can't believe they'd have one! 6Mar 09, 2008 12:28 pm Oh, good point Fiona! Our toilet is through a separate door off the ensuite, but we also added a sliding door on the ensuite instead of having it just an open door frame.
Ray. Second Time 'Round Re: I can't believe they'd have one! 7Mar 09, 2008 2:50 pm One thing that we don't like (but not forcing this view onto others because quite a number of homes do have this) is having a sink on the breakfast bar. I do understand that it can be tricky to keep an open plan kitchen and not putting the sink there, but I don't want water splash when I'm eating my breakfast.
Chris Re: I can't believe they'd have one! 8Mar 09, 2008 3:19 pm How about a row of plantation shutters in the wall between the family room and the passage to the bedrooms? I mean, who wants to see through that wall anyway? And if you keep them closed, what's the point of having them in the first place? Re: I can't believe they'd have one! 10Mar 09, 2008 4:51 pm +1 for the "viewable ensuite toilet"
Since when do people want to watch (or have to actively turn away from) people dispose of their bodily wastes ? I think the "no door ensuite" is deeply, deeply weird. Re: I can't believe they'd have one! 13Mar 09, 2008 5:14 pm nzfionaFor me, it's a wine rack IN the kitchen. Varying reasons why it is NOT for me. For me it's the same - wine needs a constant cool temperature - not the heat that comes off the back of a fridge! Also - standard height ceilings - 2.4m-ish - with huge ceiling fans so that if you raised your arms - they'd get chopped off! After 4 years - we're in! Re: I can't believe they'd have one! 14Mar 09, 2008 10:27 pm Wasted space i.e. badly designed walk in pantry; huge studies and laundries.
Gold or ceramic tapware lions, statues and thick cement ballastrades bulkheads ... why have a high ceiling and lower it with a bulkhead? I know lots of ppl like them (including DH) but I'm not a fan Re: I can't believe they'd have one! 15Mar 09, 2008 10:46 pm Don't drink wine so can't comment on that one, we do have a timber wine rack in present dining area, DH went through short lived fad of red wine drinking, now over, so wine rack nor wine will be coming to new house.
I'm also very NOT into those doorless ensuites, apart form privacy and nasty smells, seems very impractical if one of you gets up early and other sleeps in. Today's Sunday Mail had an article on open showers, ie no screen or curtain, that seems silly to me too. Kitchens - I know sinks in breakfast bars are very common but still not keen on them, even less so on cooktops in breakfast bars and I'm also not keen on kitchens without their own windows. Fine with breakfast bar stools though. DeeElle, I like walk in pantries, have one in renovated kitchen here and am sorry one won't fit in my new house. Studies - I guess it depends on the purpose and how tidy you are, I am fairly tidy person and only use internet for home purposes, also there are definite advantages with children and teenagers for having internet in an open area rather than getting up to mischief (accessing porn sites etc) behind closed doors. Not keen on the ostentaious lion type statues either, or in fact on ostenatious style full-stop, much prefer 'understated elegance'. All this just goes to show how diverse our tastes are on here - one man's (woman's) trash is another's treasure.... Yep ... and thank goodness for that. Re: I can't believe they'd have one! 17Mar 10, 2008 9:50 am I remembered another "ick" of mine, and it's one that is sure to bring howls of disagreement: lots of tellies!
Yes, seriously! We have one and have only had one for some years now. Funnily enough we will have provisions in our new place for two, but our current TV - which is a Panasonic 52" non-reflective rear projection, seven years old and still fantastic - will be in the Home Theatre, only to be used for movie watching, which we don't do during the week. We'll get a smaller one for the family room for watching the ABC! We don't do the "telly in bedrooms", so we are officially labelled "mean" by ds' friends (not ds, though.....he hates lots of TVs as well.....so long as there's one for watching Doctor Who, he's happy LOL). Fiona Re: I can't believe they'd have one! 18Mar 10, 2008 11:54 am Bad bathroom/toilet positioning. So many designs have the main toilet/bathroom buried away down a hallway in the kid's area. So when entertaining, people have to wander down past kids trying to sleep and try to keep quiet, or otherwise use your ensuite in your main bedroom (which IMO is a 'private' space)
Much better to have a powder room located near the living areas somewhere. Also hate the gaping wide ensuites with doorless toilet, laundry doors that are far away from the backyard/clothesline area, and those 'pebble' gas fireplaces bad designs 19Mar 10, 2008 3:04 pm I agree, I don't like ensuite toilets with no doors! What about the um....fumes??? And what if they ahve kids? and they just run inside your room?
A lot of the 'modern'designs have study next to the front door. I guess you can put a door to the study? My hubby is very messy and he also doesn't like the idea of strangers possibly looking through his work. What about showers with no screens? I saw one in the display house and wondered who has to clean the wet bathroom after a shower. Re: bad designs 20Mar 10, 2008 7:11 pm sammyI agree, I don't like ensuite toilets with no doors! What about the um....fumes??? And what if they ahve kids? and they just run inside your room? Me too!
