Think of the past- bright yellow benchtops etc. Now it's those sit on top of bench sinks( I hate them) and other "trendy" options. They date. If you go for a simple layout and a basic colour but could have different doors to accentuate it. That way you can simply change the doors in 10 years time if need be. The carcasses last generally. We moved a 5 year old kitchen to another room and simply replaced the benchtop (from yuk yellow) and it lasted us another 15 years. The carcass is still in good condition. For bathrooms I like white walls (but I mostly renovate rentals). I have different floors (blue/brown) and some feature tiles. Boring I know but they won't date (except if I put a vertical stripe). I do like them though. As mine are rentals I want clean and neat and when/if I sell I won't turn off any buyers. Depends what you are renovating and to what purpose.
