Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 11, 2012 2:37 pm My garage is a mess, heaps of my kids surfboards, boogie boards, bikes, couple of my paddleboards, and there's a kayak among all of that rubble! there also heaps of camping gear. Anyone got any ideas for how i can store this in the garage? every time i sort it all out it just ends up a big pile of junk within a month. Re: Home/Garage Storage Solutions 2May 11, 2012 8:40 pm I went with these guys, and have almost roof height by the length of my garage. Very handy, then I've had to put a shed also out the back for all the old baby stuff and the lawn mower. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1-5m-Long-Sp ... 460397f458 Re: Home/Garage Storage Solutions 3May 11, 2012 11:24 pm My In-laws have a shelving system that is secured through the ceiling of the garage and extends around the whole garage. I'll be there on Sunday so will take a pic and upload it Re: Home/Garage Storage Solutions 4May 12, 2012 12:36 am Have you considered in-roof storage? My BIL has boards put on the floor in his roof and has a shelving setup up here where he stores things like Christmas decorations, old baby clothes, crates of various things, etc. Very handy. DP and I have the same thing planned for our roof. Re: Home/Garage Storage Solutions 5May 13, 2012 8:05 am Have built a mezzanine storage across our single garage. Just downsized from our home with 3.5 garages into 1 single - wasn't easy 2 timber 4x2s bolted to walls & 3 4x2s fitted into joist hangers between them. Support in middle by a 3x2 under shelf and 2 threaded rods going up through ceiling to a 3x2 @ 90' across ceiling joists. Wouldn't try this on a double garage without additional support from floor in middle. More storage from 2 office cabinets @ back LH corner (eBay $2ea) & 2 shallow brownbuilt units on RH wall. Re: Home/Garage Storage Solutions 6May 14, 2012 8:56 am Most of my stuff gets used on a regular basis, thats why it all ends up a giant mess after i have tried to sort it out. the in roof storage seems good, but it seems like more long term storage? how easily accessible is it? and with the mezzanine, how long did it take you to build it all, and set it all up, also how much did all the materials set you back? Re: Home/Garage Storage Solutions 7May 14, 2012 11:48 am How tall is it in your garage? Mine is 9 foot/2700mm and I have unit like notremaison posted and then on the left side I have a full length shelf at about 2000mm off the ground using steel brackets from Bunnings and 16mm mdf sheets. spaced at 600mm centres. Planning on doing the the above head shelving on the other side when some $$ appears, but I think nrh157's idea might be for you. You'll be able to slide all the boards and things up there pretty easy and get then in and out quickly. I usually end up with mess if things have to be shifted to get them away, but that would be designated storage for those things and easy to get to as well. Re: Home/Garage Storage Solutions 8May 14, 2012 1:05 pm The roof storage is a good long term solution, definitely. It's just wasted space otherwise! We'll be putting down wood boards across the beams (nailing them down) to make sure any weight on the boards is distributed evenly across. Then some shelving units to organise whatever we put up there. If you have a look at this picture, you'll see these drop-down ladders tuck away nicely and you can install them yourself, if you're handy enough. Re: Home/Garage Storage Solutions 9May 14, 2012 6:51 pm petebuildsdecks and with the mezzanine, how long did it take you to build it all, and set it all up, also how much did all the materials set you back? Mez cost - Timber $50? Hardware (joist brackets, masonary anchors, coachscrews, threaded rod etc) $50 + sheeting (but i che@ted & used lexan fronts off vend machines cut to size & screwed to beams - I get it for free) Probably half a days work, hard part is getting your side timbers fixed to wall level & getting rod lined up through holes drilled through ceiling & up through the top cross support over ceiling joists. Wasn't keen on drilling directly into ceiling joists to put supporting screws in as it could have weakened them. Got a life, just can't find it! Re: Home/Garage Storage Solutions 10May 15, 2012 11:41 am i'm not really looking for long term storage at the moment. Cost wise that sounds reasonably good, but how much weight do you think it could hold? how long have you had it up for? is there any signs of splitting or craking, i dont really want my kids pulling out a surfboard and having all that stuff fall on them... Hi, been up for 6? months, using structural pine no reason for it to split etc. B4 I put sheeting up I put my weight (85kgs?) on each cross beam to see what flex was there - none. Probably got 200kg on it now. Can do you some better pics if you want. Got a life, just can't find it! Re: Home/Garage Storage Solutions 12May 16, 2012 8:43 am well, looks like this might be the solution. thanks for all your help mate. i'll post again if i can't figure something out. thanks to everyone else aswell In the end, two pieces of treated timber (20mm thick) were bolted onto the joists and planed when there was too much sticking out. Passed inspection. 13 7808 I would find out how deep your clay base is and depending on the depth install a cut off drain which is more than a normal agi drain.
