Browse Forums General Discussion Re: what paint to use on exterior cement render? 2May 07, 2012 9:45 am We went to the Dulux trade centre and got Total Prep (which is an undercoat, sealer and something else), we then used Dulux Weathershield for the top coats. I believe you can only get the Prepcoat from Dulux, Bunnings etc don't sell it. Be warned render uses A LOT of undercoat, it just seems to soak it up like a sponge! Re: what paint to use on exterior cement render? 3May 07, 2012 11:34 am Becasue it is a retaining wall, normal acrylic paints form a water proof barrier, so you get abuild up of water and potential blistering. It depends on the moisture level behind the wall. There are cement based "white wash" paints, made out of cement and lime, other colours than white, which allow the wall to dry ... think of it as mortar without sand and the viscosity of paint with pigment. Some people paint the brick work of their houses down to the ground level using acrylic paint, allowing water to wick up and past the damp course and wonder why they have risisng damp, remove the paint and damp is gone. It is best if you can water proof the wall from the soil side before back fill, that will then also stop salt in the water seeping into the bricks, and when it dries forming crystals. Might not be an issues in your area, depends on soil and misture. A talking dog, don't worry what it's saying, it's amazing it can even speak.
