Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 03, 2012 8:02 pm Hello everyone, new to the forum but not entirely new to renovating. Only this time we may have bitten off more than we can chew. It's beautiful but... http://s1158.photobucket.com/albums/p610/kass1960/ Priorities atm are: 1)roof repointing and sealing (it leaks) 2) new kitchen and 3) new bathroom. What I am really after are ideas for the interior. I really haven't gone past the thought of trying to restore it to its original splendor .. new floor coverings, period wall paper etc. But that leaves the front counter, office and vault .. any ideas??? Re: Old bank building 2Apr 03, 2012 8:15 pm Wow, what a great building. I assume the residence is upstairs, and downstairs is the banking chamber plus strongroom/storage? It's hard to make suggestions without an idea of the floor plan. I've seen old banks converted to other commercial properties, but not to homes. One lovely old building became a restaurant and the strongroom was used as the wine cellar... Not much help to you. At least you'll have somewhere to store your valuables safely though. Is it possible to post a rough plan of the layout? Re: Old bank building 3Apr 03, 2012 8:35 pm Oh wow,oh wow,oh WOW!!!! How exciting! As an ex bankie married to a bankie I would have loved to do something like this! Assuming you can knock a door through the wall from the kitchen. If it's like most old banks, it'll have thick concrete walls. Might need a jackhammer. Re: Old bank building 10Apr 03, 2012 11:06 pm Damn that would be one big-ass old pantry... I love the place in general - you could really do a nice job restoring it so that it has a bit more of a modern edge to it while still retaining the original character of the building. It's exactly the sort of project you see on real estate shows that look at renos of old buildings... Some people apparently have nothing better to do than comment on other people's sigs. Re: Old bank building 11Apr 04, 2012 12:53 am If you are anywhere near Creswick there is a building that is now a B&B that used to be the Old Gold Bank. Very nice renno done on that, my brother and I were looking to buy it about 10 years back. Seemed too much at the time but if only...... For your one I would try and have some sort of foyer and partition the customer service and office area so it is more functional. I also noticed that there is a distinct lack of powder or bathroom/ laundry facilities (as you would expect in a bank). Maybe the dayroom as the laundry and bathroom and the kitchenette as a wc. How exciting.... ciao Mark Re: Old bank building 12Apr 04, 2012 8:24 am How much extra land is there - cars? garden? How many in your family? Stairs? Kitchenette could be a bathroom? Vault - wine "cellar" ? Front counter - island bench - somewhere else? Are you in a street of shops? Re: Old bank building 13Apr 04, 2012 8:30 am This is what immediately springs to mind for me. Minimising movement of doors etc. Where I've indicated laundry to replace the kitchette would also be a good place for a downstairs powder room due to exisiting plumbing... I couldn't resist having a quick play with this as I ate my breakfast this morning. I'm running very late( woke up over an hour later than usual so it's very quick and dirty. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I'd prob have DM's kitchen. add a slider to the powder room. Ran out of time to do more. Duh me just realised that space behind the original office is the stairs to to the top floor. Will play more tonight if I get a chance. So now I'd leave the office where it was orignally and def use DM's plan for the opening up the dining but use my laundry/powder room section as you don't want a laundry and powder room coming off your lounge. Re: Old bank building 15Apr 04, 2012 8:48 am ^^^ I was looking at that space too.... Where I've got the Sitting could quite easily be Home Theatre by using the layout you've put for laundry etc... Most people don;t need a separate formal dining so this looks like a great idea. anyway. got to go. I leave for work in 20 mins. hav eto feed dog, shower, dress etc. LOl rushhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Re: Old bank building 17Apr 04, 2012 9:35 am Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Or ( I like this more ) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Deemaree Kyndylan Capers: viewtopic.php?f=36&t=46852 My blog: http://www.sufficientlysufficient.blogspot.com/ Re: Old bank building 19Apr 04, 2012 8:19 pm DM has got it in one. I've just got back on. Made it to work ok. JUST. My only concern with the powder room in DM's 2nd pic above opening directly into the passageway is the 2 doors opposite each other conflicting. Hence my drawing of the passage off the central passageway to lead to a laundry and a powder room. To do it though you'd have to have a slider in the powder room. Re: Old bank building 20Apr 04, 2012 8:28 pm ^^ Good point Kexkez. Easily fixed by dropping the laundry door deeper and having the powder room door where you had it....make a semi alcove entry for the powder room & laundry.
