Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Mar 26, 2012 1:35 pm We are thinking of using exposed aggregate for our front path, back entertaining area and back path in our new house. Hubby wanted to do plain concreting but i thought this might look better. Has anyone got pics to show me as I cant say I have seen a lot of it... or taken much notice when I have!! Are you happy with how it turned out? Is it easy to keep clean..? as I have a DH and two DS's who will soon be trapsing mud in from the farm. Also, Just wondering if anyone has done this themselves? I have a very handy husband who has done a bit of concreting before and was thinking of doing it himself. How did you go? Re: Exposed Aggregate 2Mar 26, 2012 2:33 pm My garage is exposed ag but hasn't been sealed yet. The only reason we exposed it though is the slab went chalky. Luckily we have gone polished concrete with exposed ag inside, so the garage will be fine. For our alfresco and porch we are just going coloured concrete (the same colour we have inside) as this is a cheaper option then getting the floor ground down and polished. I can take a pic of our garage floor to show you tomorrow if you like? But really without colour or special ag in it it just looks like any old supermarket Re: Exposed Aggregate 3Mar 26, 2012 3:00 pm Here's ours we went a bit lighter. No issue on cleaning as it was sealed well. We did leave some merbau on the back path and has a nice little stain we need to remove. What state are you in? Re: Exposed Aggregate 4Mar 26, 2012 4:02 pm We had our drive way, front path and patio area done before we moved in. Since then we have had a shed built and used the same mixture for the pad infront of the shed and a path to meet up with the original driveway. Ours is a coarser finish than a lot I have seen but I think it gives a better affect and is not a problem to walk on in bare feet unless you have baby soft skin. The finish is known as Salt and Pepper which in our case is 60% blue metal and 40% white ash but you can select a different ratio which will give a different appearance. We are very please with the overall finish and now we have garden beds it look great and we do not have to worry about future problems with possible fading of stencil finishes and cracking which shows up in stencil finishes. We still might get cracking but generallay it is not as noticable as in other finishes. If you want more photos of the lawn / path /garden areas as it loks now I can add these if needed. May be able to suggest her guy if he was good value! Not sure how easy it is to do yourself, sorry! There are "ready made" mixes, but you should be able to specify the percentage of coloured or white quartz, basalt, gravel, or blue metal and so on that you want, to create your own unique colour blend. Better to get someone who does it for a living, as it's not easy to get a good finish. I've seen really good jobs around but also a few really bad ones that exposed too much stone- too jagged and uneven underfoot and not level- also the edges were not formed neatly. When done well it looks fantastic, we are having it on our verandahs and garden paths using pea gravel, white quartz, reddish quartz and a bit of basalt to blend in with the clay/loam soil on our little country "1/2 acre of heaven". Last year I had a gas leak at my house. 3 days later, I have about 1 sqm of my exposed aggregate paving broken up. I am not sure how to go about getting it repaired… 0 10404 After some ideas on making our patio kid friendly . Currently we have exposed aggregate.
