Browse Forums General Discussion Re: New house, old furniture 21Mar 13, 2012 5:00 pm BUt trewman they can buy 2nd hand and have handme downs as well . So it still doesn't have to be all new When we were FHB and first moved in our lounge was half of one my OH had in shared accom and it wasn't new, our fridge , the same, table and chairs from inlaws from their shed/garage , our first bed- 2nd hand which was replaced not long after the washing machine with an bed head( our current one from the 4 sale section of the sunday paper) and a brand new ensemble. pots and pans and plates, towels stuff I /mum had saved and bought and stored for when I one day moved out of home. That plus OH's bits and pieces( one fry pan and a couple of knifes and forks and plates a couple of cups and glasses all miss matching) Our first washings machine was a hand me down and when it died 6 months later we bought a new one. Our first brand new purchase ever. So.... pots and pans, cutlery, crockery, linen would be common to be partly new for FHB but not everything else. Re: New house, old furniture 22Mar 13, 2012 5:45 pm If they can afford it from saving why wouldnt they buy new stuff? First home buyers dont have to all be poor and buy second hand stuff. We are building our first home both in our early 20s and we just bought a $4500 couch. We saved for it and we have been saving since we signed up to build. Some stuff we have is hand me down stuff but its all pretty new stuff. http://lindeman28.blogspot.com - Our building blog New house, old furniture 23Mar 13, 2012 6:00 pm We were fortunate to have fairly new stuff in storage when we built our home 2yrs ago do really the only new thing we bought was DS's bedroom suite (as he went into a big bed from a cot at the same time) and a 10 seater dining room suite as we sold our previous one. When my inlaws built the home they are currently living in 11yrs ago they bought new everything - and I mean new everything right down to crockery and cutlery. My MIL figured she had lived with the old stuff for close to 40yrs and deserved new stuff. They have just finished building a new house next door to us and she figures everything is still fairly new do is not buying anything new this time. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: New house, old furniture 24Mar 13, 2012 6:46 pm Exactly Trewman and Kyton agreed It's what suits you. everyone is different. and no one way is the "right way" Re: New house, old furniture 25Mar 17, 2012 11:01 am We are doing a mixture of old and new. When we sold our house last may we sold some of our furniture that we knew that either we never really needed/used or would not fit into the new home. We also gave some of our furniture to family that needed it but could not afford to buy some. Things that we will buy new are lounges, new desk for DH's study, bar stools because we finally have a kitchen bench we can sit out lol, dining table and outdoor furniture. We have just started to look at these these items this week and are about to purchase most from one company, this way we have managed to get a "deal" We did get a bargain yesterday for some outdoor furniture from Meyer, $1800 down to $650. Its a timber setting consisting of coffee table, two single chairs and a double lounge chair, I think its a bargain for the alfresco. In our previous home of 12 years we slowly did room by room and will do so again. This time however we will "decorate" our home over time, we never put up any photos or art etc but this time we want to try and get a little bit of something happening in the home lol. I am keeping my old study desk and will revamp it and just add some nick nacks from Ikea. The kids rooms are ikea furniture because we did not want to spend a fortune when down the track their styles will change. Our fridge as ugly as it is, is still functional and we will use until we can save for a new one. A mix of old and new is good... and sometimes just a change in pillows or a throw or dooner cover can do wonders... or even just paint the timber furniture. Re: New house, old furniture 26Mar 18, 2012 11:23 am We have just spent $50K on renovating our old house and then bought another $10K of furniture (late last year) to go in it. Now we are building a new house and our new furniture doesnt suit what we will be having in our new house - arghhhhhhh!! New house, old furniture 27Mar 18, 2012 4:45 pm We will be buying a fair bit of new furniture (fridge, dishwasher, kitchen table, lounge, kids bedroom suites (if I can find the right one before we move) and hopefully a new tv. We have brought a few new things in the last 12 months as well (our new bed, tv, book cases etc). We sold a few things when we sold our house as we are renting a small house and didn't have the room plus we have waited so long that we have been able to save a fair bit to pay for our new items. I will also replace all cutlery and crockery, glasses, pots and pans etc once we have moved in. Some of our stuff is 10 years old and needs to be replaced. Our leisure room we had plastic chairs for 4 years til we got a hand me down lounge. We didn't get really good quality expensive furniture as we planned on kids, so when things got a little bit trashed (as they do eventually with kids) it didn't feel as bad. Especially our pine kitchen table, over 13 years it has been trashed the most when the kids were little, a lot of the varnish has come off, plus glitter glue & texta marks and imprints into the wood (lines, marks and including my sons name perfectly written, obviously pressing to hard writing his name on paper, lol). That is the one piece of furniture that is definately being replaced. When we moved into the house we also saved for each new item we needed but waited til things were on sale. I also have my grandmothers buffet, it is about 80 years old, timber veneer but in reasonably good condition. If I didn't take it, it would have been tossed away which I couldn't do as I loved it. I now have a unique piece of furniture that is very sentimental to me. I have some modern decorative items on it and it looks great (in my opinion anyway). . We have been saving for a while for new furniture for the new house we are going to build, so we will definatetly get some nicer furniture now the kids are older. But we will be bringing our older furniture too. It is your house and if you can't afford new furniture now then that is how it will be. But older furniture can still look good with your newer items as you buy them. Buy what you like and can afford. Some other comments on this thread contain some good ideas too (thanks!!!). I have also found some factory outlets online for quite a few items I want to buy too, which are a lot cheaper than in stores, so when I am ready I'll be able to get some things straight away at a lower price.
