Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Mar 04, 2012 9:21 pm Five months ago I moved into a highset house with concrete underneath the house. The house is approximately 3 years old. I have recently noticed damp areas of concrete with salt settled on top appearing where the concrete slab joins another slab of concrete. Although the entire underneath of the house is concreted, this appears particularly at the edges of one big slab and spreads approximately 20 cm out from the join. Also the concrete which joins to this damp concrete is newer and was obviously added after the house was built. Should I be concerned about this? Will it cause any structural problems? I thought this happened in old houses? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Re: Salt damp under concrete 2Mar 26, 2012 5:03 am What you are seeing is efflorescence, yes ground salts drying up on the concrete. It is a problem because it should not be happening. Check perimeter of your home and ensure there are no drainage leaks and that ground slopes away from home into drainage. Get rid of the water in the ground and it will stop happening.
